Hello all i have just purchased the above ignition amp. Does anyone have any history with this unit, fitting , problems etc, i was going to go for twin spark but there are mixed reviews. MSD seemed very popular on the drag cars at rotorstock and japfest so im ging to give it a go. cheers

i\'m keen to get an MSD 6 for my leading coil (will stay stock though), let us know how easy/difficult it is to fit :)

turbotoaster

just remembered about that link i sent you, it says about connecting to the leading side, but then the pics show being connected to the trailing so just assume the last picture is wrong

DR SCHNITZEL

Cheers guys, not bought the coils yet.

In fact cant i just run the standardio coils? i take it i just splice into the leading coils + and -, ive not read the instructions yet. i get it in two weeks when im off my hols.

Looking at the blaster coils they are only about 50 quid each, ill run on standards for now. One thing i noticed is some people run 2 msds, one for each leading. im not sure i understand how i can run one for both leading coils. Isnt there only one signal?

turbotoaster

no, you run one for the leading coils as they fire at the same time, ie one spark plug is firing at the right time, the other is you firing with no use, its called a \'wasted spark setup\' because the other leading plug is firing for no reason.

you then have to run separate unit for each trailing plugs because your not allowed to fire them at the same time, hence you would need 3 boxes in total.

Actually reading up about the twinpower it is also a full CDI unit with fires both leading and trailing, they claim up 1.5-2.5 times the power of stock spark and ive seen them still fire well with 23psi of boost and 575cc of water going through them so i think they might be a bit under estimated.

how much did you pay for your MSD, get it from rx7store?

if you\'ve only got one MSD controller you can only run the leading coils, you\'d need two more to do the trailing (which is totally unnecessary anyway).

the leading ignition works on a \'wasted spark\' system, so they both fire at the same time although each plug has its own coil. if you want to run blasters i think you have to get two and wire them in parallel. looking at the wiring diagram the signal for the leading coils is a light green one labelled "1H".

EDIT: apparently it\'s worth reading all of the thread so you don\'t repeat everything turbotoaster said

145 quid posted from ebay, back in the uk tomorrow

DR SCHNITZEL

Ah the wasted spark, now that makes perfect sense. hopefully it should be up and running tomorrow when i get home.

cool, can you do us a favour and do a walk through guide as your fitting it, ie take loads of photos of the process as i think that would be a great help for all of us!
