Hello, been lurking around for quite awhile now trying to find as much info about the FD as i could. im currently 22 with 4ncb but last year was banned on the topping up rule (gained 6points by a 125cc) then another 6points mid last year for speeding been searching insurances for quotes which come to around £4k which there all saying im a high risk due to be\'ing banned which to me suck\'s i currently drive a 2.0 modifed 2003 Ford Mondeo for my daily drive to and from work. my insurance covers me to driver other cars which is insured. if i got my mother to insure the FD then me drive the car would i be breaking the law?

Short answer is yes, which is probably not what you want to hear.

It\'s not a case of breaking the law - it\'s that your insurance could be invalid if you misrepresent something to them = you\'re not covered.

It\'s the same as not being 100% honest about anything - mods, milage, useage etc Your premium is calculated on the risk and if your insurance co don\'t have the full facts they can\'t make an acurate risk assessment. So if you make a claim and they discover something is inconsitent with what you told them then they can simply refuse to pay out - harsh I know, but that\'s how it works.

I know people do insure cars in other peoples names, particulary for young drivers, but they are taking a risk of getting caught out. Plus stating your intention to do something like this on a public forum is probably not a good idea as insurers do look at car club forums.

It\'s a shame as we need more people interested in RX-7\'s. If you\'re keeping the Mondeo can\'t you get a quote for a second car, maybe with limited millage?

it is the law that you have to be 25 for the insurance to drive any vehicle, you have been misinformed.

if oyu were 25 it would be ok.  but not on a perminant basis.  with regards to your ban, i was done for drink driving and the only way im insured now is the way you were thinking, but i am 25.  my wife is insured on the fd and im insured on my car to drive any vehicle.  with these policies you are only 3rd party when driving a second vehicle

hope this clears things up

Not ALL policies cover this i\'ve found. Having FC insurance over 25 does not automatically give you 3P on other cars for some reason...

Ok thanks for info guys.

You need to go to a broker, fess up to all your sins, mod\'s etc and see what they come up with. If you go limited miles and use it as a second car, it\'\'ll be expensive, but less than £4k. All depends what you are prepared to pay to drive an FD?

Have to disagree with some of the info here guys.  What you are describing is a form of fronting (the more usual type is just having your mum be first named driver, and you as a secondary driver).

If you arrange your policies this way, knowing that you are really the main driver, and/or owner of the vehicle you are behaving fraudulently.  Note that ownership is not the same as registered keeper, so just having a V5 in someone elses name is not enough to protect you.  Your insurance would therefore be invalid - this means you are driving WITHOUT insurance, regardless of whether or not you have what looks like a valid insurance certificate.

It absolutely IS illegal to drive without valid insurance.

I didn\'t say it wasn\'t - I was pointing out that it\'s more than just a case of breaking the law, it\'s the fact that you\'re not insured.
