i am getting a pulsing/whinning noise. i put this down to the clutch release bearing as its always been grumbly and i figured that its just got worse however im now having second thoughts that it is this.

i first noticed the noise about 2 months ago cruising at about 55-60 one evening, i dipped the clutch and it stopped (hence why i thought it was release bearing). the noise has gradually gotten worse to the extent where it happens when im at standstill at junctions. however today i popped down the shop and have found a way to reproduce it all the time, as i pull away in first slowly at say 1200 rpm the npise is very loud and stays that way upto 1700rpm then dies away if i pull away in 2nd it doesnt happen and i tried to reproduce it at the same revs in 3rd down a hill and it doesnt do it then. if i dip the clutch it stops.

my thiery is either clutch release bearing - low speed in first causing loudest noise lessening as speed up.
gearbox issue with first gear - as the noise is about 7 or 8 times louder at low revs in this gear than at any other time.

however as ive never heard this issue before can it occur if the pilot bearing is knackered? or is it a common problem if the gearbox is completly stuffed??

anyone had this before and can shed dome light on it?? i was going to get the clutch release bearing done tomorrow but now im not so sure.

cheers

it sounds like the release bearing to me they make all sorts of strange noises worth getting it done anyway before you start pulling the gearbox

release bearing will make a noise if you put your foot on the clutch... thats when its engaged thats when it will make a noise, if its making a noise on idle and you put your foot on the clutch and it stops its your bearings in your gearbox!

mine does the same but has lasted a fair while, i replaced clutch and release and the pilot its still there... its the input shaft bearing in the box.

This may not solve your problems but change your gearbox oil for racing type oil like redline. It transformed my old 911 turbo which has a gearbox from a tractor!

after speaking to a few people today ive come to the conclusion that my gearbox bearings have gone. its a surprise though as the gearbox was fully rebuilt just over 10k miles ago and ive run it on silkolene fully synthetic for the last 9k  :confused:

I will tap up a mate of mine, I bought a second hand engine of him which turned out to be a peach, he also had a good gearbox I will see if he still has it thats if your intersted of course. Looks like your only option now, reworking an overhauled gearbox may not be a good idea
what year is your FD

cheers mate. ive already sourced one today and paid a deposit until i can get it picked up. apparently my old one should be fine to recon at a later date as a back up.
