Air Temps and heat soak

I have read the various threads on here relating to air temps and I would like suggestions based on my concerns.

The FD3S runs a single t04S with all the required gubbins. Cooling wise I have Custom Nimbus G3 shield covering both the turbo, downpipe and further material covering the intercooler (from rad heat), Radtec radiator, PFS SMIC intercooler with duct and the RIAT thermal sensor.

These are the temps I see during driving.

Lets say the ambient temps are 20C, whilst around town I see high 30\'s/40C (which doesn\'t take too long), bring the turbo to say 0 pressure will bring the temps to say, 35C and it will stay around this on full boost until letting off the throttle, the temps will rise again to say 38C on overrun/cruise.

If I take the car out for a cooler run, say a motorway, the temps will drop into low 20\'s and sit around 25-30C on boost.

My plans are to install WI in the very near future as I hope this will reduce the temps more on boost but I can\'t see it changing whilst driving in traffic and around town.

Are these temps normal and what will the estimated results be after WI?

Ps : I don\'t want to install a front mount just yet as it will have limited to little affect whilst driving around town and I would like to try the WI first on my current setup.

Cheers

Just to add... How hot should the cold side of the turbo get, mine gets very hot to the touch say, 60-70C at a guess. Is this normal?

Your temps are like mine with my new tub setup which is much better than the twins believe me.

Turbos do get hot. the cold side is attached to the hot bit rememeber i think the front of mine gets more like 100c

Thanks, pheww.... TBH I cannot remember what the previous readings were on stock twins, never really bothered to take note of air temps until now, after i could touch, well try to touch the now easy to get too areas after going single tub.

I would be interested to know the air temp for stock twins?

Cheers

once warmed up it was rare to see less than 32 oc air temps on twins, the dp is 2 cm from the back turbo

I have the standard twins, custom airbox, custom made duct to an ARC SMIC and the new RIAT sensor. Sunday just gone with ambient temps at around 21 degrees i was seeing 26 degrees when on the move with 0 boost, once boosting it was peaking at around 48 degrees if using WOT for lengths of time, but never really went over this... Standing in traffic is usually the same as you get due to heatsoak etc and rises to 30-35 pretty quick, but does come down quickly when moving again...

When i had the Mazda standard intercooler, you could times the figures above by 1 and a half at least, and would easily get into the 60\'s on boost.....

Is your Intercooler ducted? and out of interest what sort of Boost are you running? (Just to see what the load on your motor is)

There was plans of rigging up a cold air feed to the Turbo BUT!! there isn\'t many places you can get a 4" pipe in the cold air in front of the Rad. Any ideas?

chrisJDM

those temps sound fine to me :Thumbsup!

Yeah my intercooler is ducted, turbo\'s currently running at 0.8 bar but spikes to 0.9....

I still have the standard airbox, but have modified it to take air from below the box via the gap between the radiator and the body which i have blanked off to form a duct which feeds directly to the bottom of the airbox aswell as keeping the front intake also

Stock twins, IC and rad and I can only dream of temps like that! Regularly into the 60\'s if I have to sit still after a hard run, 40\'s to 50\'s on the move. Runs fine though so can\'t imagine your temps are gonna be an issue!

I really should get around to improving the cooling... Hoping that installing the HKS downpipe and losing that bloody pre-cat will make a difference in the meantime!

wow guys, thanks for all the response, been a bit worried after reading temps should be in the 20\'s etc... Then I read threads about this on rx7.com and they see temps that are very high compared to ours. So, for single setups 40-50c in traffic is normal, 30-38C after drive outter town (after heat sock) is normal. And low 30\'s mid 20\'c on motorway is normal.

I have not yet tried to test WOT on the track to see the increase but water injection will be fitted before that! I just wanted to know things are ok before moving on... thanks... :D

Finally, what is the safe limit in temps for WOT on boost? 40C? 45c?

Aubec

I wouldn\'t worry about the track mate, I track mine and the temps haven\'t gone any higher than above. As long as your watertemps stay reasonable too you\'re a long way from any heat related problems I\'d say.  It\'s a bit different in California, Florida or Arizona to good old blighty!
