Our Turbo 2 keeps backfiring, I\'ve only heard it once as it\'s mainly my girlfriend who uses the car but she\'s just phoned me from her mobile a little distressed that it has made another loud BANG! She said it happened at about 6500rpm when changing gear. Any suggestions? I\'m not very up on modern engines with engine management & Turbo\'s etc so wouldnt know where to start? In all other respects it seems to be running fine. The only other thing (probably unrelated) is the buzzer keeps coming on whenever you start the car, it was originally going off because the coolant was low but after a top-up that light no longer comes on. There are no lights coming on with the buzzer this time and it doesnt appear that there are any bulbs gone.

Thanks,
Phil.

Hi Phil,
I don\'t know about the buzzer, but when I had my turbo II cab
the only time the buzzer went off is when I would go round bends at speed, I then found out this only happened when the oil was below a certain level, it ended up being a good indicator for me to top up the oil.  Does the buzzer stay on continually or does it shut off after a while ??
The backfiring first I would say check the spark plugs.
I doubt the timing would all of a sudden be out and cause this, what tends to cause it otherwise is unburnt fuel in the exhaust, reasons for it possibly running rich so this would occur are many.
Is the car in standard form ??
For example, I have a blown inlet manifold gasket on my fd the blow is on the exhaust side, so I am losing vacuum, the ecu over compensates with more fuel, so I have a lot more popping in my exhaust compared to normal. Don\'t know if this helps any ??

Thanks Brian, the buzzer sounds for a few seconds after starting then goes off, it doesnt sound again. Oil level is at the max. If you turn it off as soon as the buzzer sounds then restart it, the buzzer doesnt sound again.

The car is standard other than a cat replacement pipe and there appear to be no exhaust leaks.

Phil.

Just noticed you\'re in Croydon, I see a black FD on the A23 fairly regularly, is that you?

If it\'s a kitted up one then yep that would be me.
My family live in Wallington so I am often in that neck of the woods on the A23. I guess you would have to be on Brighton road to spot me then ?? Whenever I am going to south coast any at all I always travel down a23 too.
With regards to your turboII backfiring as the idle is normal and it drives fine otherwise, I find it quite unlikely  to be the timing as that would not effect the car only at high rpm. With cat removed you have greater flow in the exhaust which in turn means that because the exhuats can get rid of the gases quicker more is aloud into the combustion too, this is really where the extra power comes from when you free up the exhuast to breath better. So the back firing at that rpm to me sounds quite normal as I suspect it would be unburnt fuel in the exhaust, which would be quite normal for an rx7. It probably scare\'s your wife a bit because the cat has been removed and it would be quite loud.

Hi Phil ,

Sounds maybe ECU or some other electrical prob , for a prob like this l would ring Tim 01725 516462 tell him Clive sent you .

Hope this helps.

Be good to see you tonight if you can make it.

my turbo II backfires a little at tickover when its first started (very small backfiring probably 1-3 times per minuite, and never more than a dull pop resulting in a small puff of grey smoke from the exhaust)...     ...I have been assuming this is normal \'on choke\' and when just warming up at tickover, but read this thread with intrest...

...is this normal rotary behaviour too?...     ...I have a cat-less exhaust system so Im guessing the above applies here too?...

Hi Phil,
Long time no speak.
I wouldn\'t worry about the backfires,my cabriolet does it too.It has a stainless racing beat exhaust on it and does some wicked flames sometimes,I have followed it and it is impressive.Nothing to worry about and relatively normal.
Your Girlfriend sounds like she knows how to drive it doin backfires at 6500.
LOL

Thats it another TII with out cats.. =more boost,a bit more fuel
unburnt and bang !(prob worse after a good kicking down the motorway in 4th gear)great at night though I\'m with Carl
on this one!

Yes!  one of the best traits of the rotary :)

I use to love revving them up to 8,000rpm in 2nd then back off the accelerator - always a guaranteed BANG!

When giving it a hard time on a motorway/freeway for a while you can shoot big flames out, providing a fireworks show for the people behind you.  :cool
Thanks,

Thanks guys, and yes Carl, she enjoys driving it!:)  I\'ve told her not to worry about the backfiring. Only thing is that its been on the road for a couple of months now and this has only just started, maybe its just coz she\'s getting more accustomed to it ;) The buzzer is becoming a pain now though, it\'s going off now periodically, instead of just after starting it. May have to disconnect it if I can\'t find the cause .

hi phil

i was wondering how many miles you were getting on a tank of fuel. last time i saw you , you said it didnt go far on a tank. the backfires are down to egnited fuel in the exhaust and if your getting 8 mpg then i would side with clive and say ecu....

t2rew

and if the buzzer is telling you that something is wrong as well ??????????
