Hi guys :D

My new engine is being put together at the moment, so I snapped some pics!

One of my brand new FD housings! :D

Unported exhaust

Painted and prepped plenum

Specs:

Brand new FD housings, extra dowel pins and ported exhaust sleeves
2nd hand low km FD rotors with standard Mazda 2mm seals
Cosmo plates with flowed runners but standard port timing

Turbo will be a Garrett GT35/40 and the engine should push 400hp to the wheels without much effort on pump fuel and 20psi.

Should be back on the road next week!!

For those that don\'t know me or the car, a quick rundown

85 RX7
13B Cosmo engine
Previously had a Garrett TA45 turbo (replaced on this new engine with Garrett GT35/40 BB turbo)
Haltech E6K
T2 box
Made 380rwkw on 24psi on Australian Dyno Dynamics dyno and C16 fuel
Best ET is 10.32 @ 133mph

G\'Day Steve,

Awesome mate - thanks for putting the information up on your car.

I think you could safely say if you bought your car across here -heads would turn, then roll.   :)

Does Bill do all of your work there?  who does your tuning - Hitman?
Thanks,

Glenn Butcher

What size housings and trim are you going to run on the turbo?

We have a member in the club running a GT35/40 with a .84 turbine (exhaust) housing, and a .7 comp. housing.  And at 14psi (just under 1 BAR) made 309hp at the rear wheels (376hp calc. at flywheel).

It is avail. with a 1.05 turbine (exhaust) housing which should be pretty awesome.
Thanks,

t2rew

ajc,  some things that interest me, you seem to be doing a mix and match of engine parts, fd this and cosmo that, why not just get a fd engine?

extra dowl pins, are these the large diamater pins that line the rotor housings up, if so where do you put the new ones, this seems to be an ozzy thing. i read in mags about people doing it when i was over there but wasnt sure what it was and havent seen it mentioned out side oz. i know it stops the engine twisting but at what point of tuning do you recomend it.

mazda 2mm seals. your running very high boost and only have 2mm seals. i am wondering what seals to use, i want 2mm mazda because there is no need to work on rotors but lots of people recomend 3mm seal. also there is those issanti (i dont know how its spelt ) seals at a rediculus price. i cant afford to spunk money so 2mm seals look the best option i wondered what helped you decide.

cost. it seems that for me to build an engine over here it will cost me£900 but you guys over there talk about seals going and popping in your other engine till you rebuild the old one,  almost like it dosent cost much so the only thing to consider is the time. how much to rebuild over there, are you all just rich.

thanks ,,,,,,,,,, jay

MikeLMR - Thanks mate! I try my best :D

richrx - Hell yes it is! I love it! :D

Glenn - I actually thought about getting my car across there! Like I said I have all my family in Scotland. I spoke to someone from the roads authority over there and I could drive my car around Britain for 30 days without needing to get it inspected or anything. Anymore than that nd it needs to get UK registration! I would hate to see what it costs to ship a car from Sydney to Britain though!! :o

I will be going with the 1.06 housing and the .70 front. A .86 housing is far to small!! I think thats smaller than a T2 exhaust housing! If he put a larger housing on, power would go up a great deal and changes in boost response would be marginal!
With my TA, I made 356hp on 11psi and 433 on 22psi. With my old T04, 60mm blade and 1.32 housing I made 344hp on 14psi. Big exhaust housing = power :D

And yes Bill does all my engine work and Matt does the tuning!

Jason - The FD and Cosmo parts are pretty interchangable. The only parts that aren\'t are the end plates and the inlet. The Cosmo inlet flows more air than the FD one and the secondary inlet ports are 5mm larger than an FD.

For the larger dowel pins, the actual dowel holes on the housings are machined out slightly to accept the larger pins. Some people always use it, others don\'t. A friend has a Datsun 1200 Coupe running 8.5 @ 155 and his engine doesn\'t have the extra dowels, however his engine is solid mounted to the chassis! :p For me, its just a safety thing. Better to spend the money and wonder if it helps, than not to do it and break it. Well for me anyway! :D

Alot of people here have been moving back to the 2mm Mazda seals and been quite successful with them. My engine builder used them in his drag FD 20B which ran 8.25 @ 165 and he also uses standard 2mm in most of his high HP engines now. Previously, I have used the HME 3mm seals to great effect. They are a very strong seal and have lasted a long time. I have had 2 engines go in a big way and the apex seals were always perfect!! The engine I am replacing did\'nt have the double spring seals, I think if it did I wouldn\'t be rebuilding right now! The twin springs would help stop chatter when I am pulling 10500rpm on the start line :D :D

Its interesting to note that my engine builder is moving to the Ianetti seals on his new engine. Guess he came into some money! :D

This short block, to buy from my engine builder, would be around $6000AUS, mainly because of the new housings. The housings are $700AUS each and the seal kit is $1300 so there is nearly $3000AUS there alone! Throw in rotors, maching (Extra dowel pins are $350AUS per housing) and labour and you see why it costs. Of course I am not paying that much :D

Hope this helps, sorry for War & Peace :D

t2rew

thanks, i think i will stick with the cheaper, easier to fit 2mm seals.:)

Glenn Butcher

Steve,

The more info. the better "War and Peace" most welcome :)

Great stuff, I\'ll be really interested to see how your turbo performs on your car.  I would have thought it wouldn\'t perform as good as your existing TO4 - given the size?

How long have you known Marty H. for? he was one of the guys responsible for getting me into rotor\'s!

Is that Matt as in Hitman? (sorry I don\'t know his real name).

We\'ll be using Ianetti\'s in the 4rotor when it is finally done.  Allistair @ //www.evil7.com has Ianetti\'s also.  Going on the power they got out of Dennis Marquis\' FD drag car - they should be pretty damn good (get what you pay for I guess).

2mm seals with the right tuning and you can\'t go wrong!
Thanks,

AJC13B

Glenn - No worries :D

The TA I have at the moment is good for a drag car. The blades and shaft are damn heavy and boost drops between gears on a manual shift box are excessive! On data logs when I was racing, boost would drop 14psi on a shift when I was off 100% throttle for less than a tenth of a second!

A777 has the GT35/40 on his 1st gen and his best quarter time thus far is 10.08. His car is alot quicker over the first half of the track, even though he might not have the same peak HP as me? So more HP earlier > more HP later :D

Even though the GT turbo might not have the physical size of my current TA, it more than makes up for it in much better blade designs as well as higher shaft RPM from the BB core.

I have come full circle with my car. It started out as a street car, then I wanted bulk power, then a 10 second 1/4 and now its back to street :D The GT is the best mix of great power and low down response!

Yep, Matt is HITman. I have known Marty for a few years now! Met through Mazsport and going to the street races!

As for the Ianetti seals, personally, I don\'t see the need for them. But thats just me! And Alex and I have had our differences about the Marquis car :D When it puts the numbers on the board that backs up the HP claim...but thats not what we are here for :D

Glenn Butcher

Hi mate,

From reading the FAQ\'s on the Turbonetics site (http://www.turboneticsinc.com/faq.html) the feedback is certainly good with the Ball Bearing turbo\'s.

I believe they are very driveable also - we\'ll all be keeping a close eye/ear out on your car.

Matt is meant to be coming over here to the UK soon to do some tuning.

I know Dennis\' car has the HP, but they have been having problems with it launching etc.  you are right - until the numbers are on the board it don\'t mean much! :)

.ps Do you mean Alec in NZ?
Thanks,

AJC13B

The turbonetics turbos use a very different core assembly to the Garrett range, the Garretts are alot better basically! I will send you an email, you will like the contents :D

As soon as the car is back together, there will be photos and videos, don\'t you worry about that!

Yeah Matt mentioned he might head over, seems to be a bit of demand for his services in the UK at least! If he heads over this year, I might tag along and see the relos!

When I said Alex, I meant Allistair, not sure what I was thinking on that one! :D

Glenn Butcher

Ta Steve!

I thought the Turbonetics (Tuffy range etc.) were pretty good?  There are quite a few top drag cars in the US using them.

Are the cores no good then?

That would be good, tell Matt - I\'d like to meet up with him, I can give him the rundown on the scene here :)
Thanks,
