Right im planning on doing an oil change (93 fd twin turbo), replacing the usual bits oil, oil filter and sump plug and washer, just had a few questions

1. Is there a special technique in doing this on a rotary?

2. Is it wise to use engine flush?

3. How much oil should i put in? i checked the halfords chart and it said 5L! is that correct?

4. Would anyone be interested in me doing a guide on here with pics etc as i go?

thanks guys :driving

I just did mine as i would have a regular 4 banger. The hardest part is finding out which oil to use! But dont get started on that as its a bit of a can of worms! Lol!

In reality 5 litres would be how much you\'d need after a rebuild. If its just a change 4 and a half or so will sufice. But buy 5 because remember you need to top up a rotary fairly regular with the greesy stuff!

As for engine fluss i\'m unsure. Supposed to be a bad idea on an old engine. Thats for a regular piston anyway. Could be a totaly diff story on a Rotar.

An ilustratied guide has to be a good idea though! Such a simple task but one that reeps great benifits!

Oh, i heard its a good idea to fill the new oil filter with oil first? Let it all soak in and then screw it down. Cant remember why its a good idea! Lol! I did it though and all is fine.:Thumbs-up

Yeah, no different to a regular piston engine. The FD will take about 4.5 litres ish after draining from the sump plug. Just add in a bit at a time if your worried about adding too much.

There will still be oil in the oil cooler(s) and lines, about half a litre or so.

Wouldnt recommend engine flush personally as the engine uses the oil for lubrication.

Its pretty straight forward and nothing to worry about if you\'ve changed the oil on any other vehicle. In this maintainance case, its just another car. :yes

So I\'m a bit confused, is it 10w40 or 5w40 that we need to use?
Thanks

First off, i\'m planning on doing mine on Saturday. If you can hang about til then i\'ll post the pics up after i\'ve done it.

Absolute piece of p!ss though tbh, jack up car - remove sump plug - put oil everywhere, etc etc!

In terms of oil, everyone says different!! the only difference AFAIK between the grades is what temperatures they are suitable for. I use 10W40 mineral all the time.

ok little tips

1 warm engine so oils warm and runny not cold and thick
2 remove dip stick and oil filler cap
3 jack car up in the air or use ramps /dont start vehicle with the two above off youll get oil every where
4 remove sump plug with bowl under neath little tip keep presure on the plug till the very last turn and you wont get oil all over you and the floor
5 drain into a sensible container till all drips have stopped then remove oil filter.
6 insert new plug or new sump washer old nut ? which ever wipe and tighten up doesnt need to be majoy tight or itll thread .also before fitting new filter grab a dribble of oil on you finger and wipe round the new filters rubber seal this will help to stop leaks and seal nicely then fit filter
7 insert oil id say roughly around 3.5 to 4 lts of mineral oil then allow to settle and dip and check till you reach optimum amount
simples >:)

What I also tend to do is put an extra block of wood on the drivers side axel stand to give the car a slight tilt. This helps drain out more oil.

I know not everyone will agree with this as you should probs jack car up level but it\'s the way i\'ve always done it!

As above really, the only thing i do is jack the drivers side up, take off drivers side wheel, get the sump plug out, (wear rubber gloves) when all the oil is out lower the car down till the drivers side brake disk is as low as it will go, just to get any dregs out, jack it up again, put the drain plug in with new washer, lubricate filter rubber seal, i dont fill the oil filter as you have to turn it upside down to fit it. used Castrol Gtx 10/40, till now but thinking of Prolong in future,

You could get one of those valves to replace the sump plug...can\'t remember what they\'re called but I have one and makes changing oil a damn sight less messy :) I use Castrol GTX as well.

Hmmm - you talkin about the sump tap that\'s kicking around in some post (might even be a sticky) on these forums?  they do look pretty darn good, if you can get hold of one...
