Mesh or no mesh covering bumper gaps

I heard once that wire mesh placed over the front bumper gaps will impede the flow of air into the intercooler (FMIC) and rad. (depends on the mesh i spose)

I heard that over about 50mph, the turbulence caused by the mesh would stop virtually all air getting in, and it would instead be sucked up from underneath or from elsewhere in the engine bay.

is this true?

Given there\'s quite a lot of expensive equipment in that area, maybe I should consider covering up?

Don\'t want to make intake temps any worse though.

Hi RedRummy,

Sorry can\'t answer your question but thought i\'d say hi after bumping into you in brighton tuesday, we\'ll have to meet up at with the motors at some point..... and considering what you\'ve spent on your rx7 i might be needing your advise at some point!!

leave it off, you dont see track cars with it. It will cause terb but not sure enough to worry about on roads. But it will collect leaves etc

Jake

You do see track cars with it...I guess it doesn\'t cause any issues...

dont mesh it... i had mesh on an old bodykit on a ****e old car i had.. 3 stones later and it looked awful.. if u have a nice rad/intercooler, leave it off.. it\'ll survive :)

and yup, they do collect leaves/litter and u\'ll look like ur driving a plough.

I\'m planning on plastic mesh if i can get hold of some - more for cosmetic reasons than anything else - for reasons lots of people don\'t get, i quite like having the shiny things hidden behind the bumper.

After puncturing radiators and a previous intercooler, one with a pidgeon and the other with half a brick chucked up by a wagon Id vote for mesh. Not as pretty but better safe than sorry on a road car in my opinion.

RedRummy

yeah, I don\'t care if you can see the intercooler, I just want to protect it without ruining air flow...

still undecided then....  :Giggle

IMO, add mesh - one trip to Nurburgring - very high autobahn runs and 8 laps (trailered home)  and my FMIC has silly amounts of damage bent fins all over the place and noticable from a distance to.
the FIMC was new 1 week before i went.... all depends where you drive - if its just short trips back and fore work then maybe keep it off but all it takes is even a small bird / stone to hit it at 70mph!!! and can cause so real damage...

I currently have mesh over my oil coolers each side but the FMIC is open... not for too much longer though!

I dont have any mesh at the moment but my aircon rad is protecting the water rad :D  so I guess if you are REALLY worried then mesh it up and remove aircon!

Im going to mesh mine up because I want to protect the rads & oil coolers :)
