Out of interest, i know this is an old question but if you got the two turbo\'s using the same Hot side (say a 1.0 for argument sake) on the same Extended port motor which one would have the best response on the road?? (i\'m also looking at the proper Garrett Z rather than the HKS one)

I\'m thinking the R is supposed to be slightly smaller than the Z but i\'m not sure how much the RB core will claw that back??

I am interested in the opinions of people that have had both turbo\'s or have driven both types?? You see i have a HKS R Kit but its getting on and showing signs of needing a rebuild so i\'m thinking (rebuild or replace??)

Isn\'t the Z using new design technology?

Well this is why i ask, i am told that the Z is better for high HP applications and the HKS R is better for the road?? But i\'m guessing thats only due to the HKS Version coming with a very small (by our standards) Turbine housing??

I only have a 400rwhp target which but this means the GT35R hybrids are out, but it falls right into the Z/R band but i\'ve never driven a car with a Z fitted and tbh i like the idea its RB (not really had much to do with them as i was a little too aware of the expencive Rebuilds if it goes wrong)

All that said i keep hearing the Z is just an R with a RB core??? So this is why i ask before blowing a grand on one and finding its not much better than my R

The wheel sizes between the R and the Z are the same. The actual blade design is different between the two, The Zed is  newer tech design in terms of the fins, its also dual ball bearing. I had both the R and the Z , and the Z out spooled/response the R and the power was much higher on the Zed , flowed slightly more air due to the bigger A/R housing 1.15 versus 0.96.Th turbo of choice for time attack FDs in Japan.
Expect 400rwhp on extend port at just over 1 BAR

On the Z i notice the hks uses an anti surge comp cover, i have done a bit of reading up on them and people are saying steer clear. My question is if this is the case why do HKS use an Anti surge cover on there Z kit? is it one of there "Custom" designs they like so much?? and does it make any difference (well apart from the noise)

So for a safe bet on a Street ported motor a Z with a .96 will be a good all rounder?

Thanks for the Info much appreciated.

How so? the last time i was reading about slightly bigger frame turbos was it was a good thing.

Btw, Trust\'s new T88 has an anti surge cover too.

To be quite honest i\'m a little confused myself about this as i have read up quite allot on the subject and every one seems to have there own opinion on it. I Really don\'t know anything about the Bigger Turbo\'s as i\'m more interested in the Z\'s

But this is an example...

I know there is allot of guess work on allot of these Threads so i\'ve tried to find people that know there stuff.

Remember that a lot of the surge can/should be controlled with a good map on the ECU.

From what i can tell Surge is more to do with Boost level than the size of the Turbo but i\'m no expert on this.

Well on my old Garrett Z it had a standard comp cover, but anti surge cover will do no harm, plus anti surge covers have been on T51s for ages.
.96 rear A/R on the Z maybe too small if you have a big street port, I know a couple of people have changed up to the bigger 1.15
