Is there such thing as a chargecooler kit for the FD?
My brother is about to order one for his S1 Escort RS Turbo, which has a 1900cc Specialised Engines conversion with T3 hybrid and apparently this charge-cooler kit keeps everything cool and grants huge power gains.
From what I can tell you don\'t need a huge fmic or equivalent so space can be saved as the charge temp. is water cooled.
Not totally sure how it works yet, as I haven\'t seen one but you don\'t have to be on the move for it to work.

It sounds like this sort of thing would be ideal for the rotary.

As opposed to an intercooler which reduces pressurised intake air temperatures by transfering heat to atmospheric air, a charge cooler does the same but transfers the heat into water. Exactly the same principle as your car radiator but in reverse!! Lotus did a lot of work into this area.

There are various pros and cons of chargecooling when compared to intercooling but I\'m not that much of an expert! Obviously chargecooling would require some fancy plumbing and I would assume some way to normalise the water temperature. Otherwise it would progressively heat up and become less effective. I guess it would have advantages over a large intercooler as it\'s performance wouldn\'t be so dependent upon air flow/ vehicle speed. Also wouldn\'t require a large surface area like an intercooler.
ric (rexy has gone now all I have left is NFSU2 :( )

Does require all the water though, and this obviously still takes up space and has weight.

I suppose you can get a cup of tea after each trip though!

I have a charge cooler on my MX-5 and it does work well, but as to whether it\'s better than a similar size inter cooler I do not know.  I\'ve seen some ehavy debates over it and am still none the wiser.

i had a pace charge cooler on my series 2 rs turbo.   it worked brilliantly.  yes there is a bit of plumbing involved.    the escort kit had a little radiator id say about 10 inch by 8 inch 2 core.  which went in the intercoolers original possition.   then the chargecooler unit was 8 in by 5 by 5.    a little aqurium pump. a swirl pot   (for toping up system )         also put ice cubes in here to help even more.

my escort had stage 3 head. 285 cam.  lower comp pistons. hyb turbo t3 i think. charge cooler.    it gave 208 bhp at fly.  all year. didn`t matter how hot the day.    which was a gain of i think 15 bhp. from the pace intercooler that was originally on there.  which doesn`t seem huge in rx7 world but for a scort that was good.

like i said it was the consistancy of the cooler that i liked.
i still got my old charge cooler in the garage i think.

hmmmmm   i am a plumber      fitting to an rx7 can`t be too hard!!!

oh forgot to say it had a 2 stage pump!!   low boost it was one speed. high boost it was faster circulator of the water...
if i had 8 hour to cut down a tree. i`d spend 6 sharpening the axe
