Anybody had trouble with a warped exhaust manifold??

Finished fitting a T04S to my motor and give it a blow round the block, Gave it a check over, no leaks rad fan\'s were coming on and off no trouble but noticed a blow and could smell fumes from the turbo area, used the old pipe in ear trick and could hear the blow around the rear exhaust port, Gutted now it was the first time I\'ve drove it in almost a year and now i\'ve gota rip the lot off again!!!!. on a positive note the turbo flutter is metal even at only 0.2 bar, I never took it about 4000rpm to scared Lol

Sorry to hear your having problems,

Before you take it all off check that it\'s not blowing from a waste gate flange,

As regards the manifold which hopefully is not the problem, a lot of cheap manifolds do warp and we have found that they need to be heavy iron at least 12mm thick to cope with the heat and not distort or crack.

Hope this helps

Na it\'s definitely the port that\'s blowing, i checked the waste-gate flange, i did think that it could be that.

The manifold looks like a T4 greddy manifold, tubular not cast it\'s not a cheap SS chrome ebay jobby, Id say the flanges are about 10-15mm thick, there was a small amount of damage to the turbo flange witch I welded up before fitting but never checked the exhaust port flanges, could just be the gasket because i used the old gasket\'s??

I find out soon when I get chance to rip it off, British weather!!!!

If you get it off and have stuck a straight edge across the face and its O/K reassemble it using Walkers exhaust paste as this is the highest temp stuff on the market but obviously please allow that the goo will squash out as you don\'t want it going into the exhaust ports

Wouldn\'t normally suggest the stuff but if your flange face is flat your only other alternative is £170plus worth of manifold gaskets !
All the best Clive

You can soak the gasket in water for a day to make it swell. Also I use a small propane torch to "Set" the muffler paste, So it does not blow out when you start the car.

Also check if the leak is not a pinhole at the Manifold / Pipe join.

If the manifold has bent slightly in the middle, you can Grind out slightly the bit that sits over the centre plate, Fixes alot of evils.

Also makes it easier to flie flat then! (Or use a piece of Lam glass / Water / Wet and dry and some :Grrr )

Never had that happen making a Bodgy extractor set have I........
