My insurance company has kindly asked told me that they wont cover me for theft if my car doesnt have a cat 1 alarm and immobiliser.

Now then i\'ve always used GAP security for every import i do, with the Viper LCD pager cat one\'s.

However i\'ve heard stories about the ignition break down of the RX7 under load due to the fact that the wiring used by the alarms is too fragile.  With that in mind what sort of alarms/alarm companies do you guys use?

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I notice you\'re based in St Helens.... strange request, but as u might of seen from my thread, i\'m almost defo buyin the FD, even tho i have never been in one!! would there be any chance u would take me out in yours?? i just want to see what the fuss is all about! don\'t want to drive or nothin! lol

obviously i\'ll bring the beer tokens and the petty money.

i\'m only on the the othe side of the east lancs so just wondered really with you being so close.

Also, you say above about every import u do? how much would I be looking for a fresh (ish) rebuild, decent tyres/suspension and new gearbox? not bothered about the yr really

Cheers :)

and sorry if i sound like a cheeky ****

Kevin

Hi mate, no worries about the hijack thing.  My location is my parents house which is abit out of date now, lol.  Currently on contract living in Kingswood near Bristol.  You wouldnt be too impressed with mine at the moment as it\'s just been rebuilt this month and cant really be taken over 4K with no boost, and im only 200 miles into the 1000 mile marathon, so a fiesta would seem quicker......

Hopefully by the time I go back home it\'ll be run in properly and if your still on the look out your more than to go out for a spin.  Sorry cant be much more help on that.

I\'ve been importing cars for over 10 years, but have recently wound down the buisness as there is just no money in it anymore, but i still do a few per year for some of my contacts.

As for costs, the last RX7 I did broke down like this, just so you can see a rough guide:

1994 R2 with 70K on the clock (Grade 3.5, would of been grade 4 but there was a pin dent over rear wheel arch)

FOB: £2210
Customs/Shipping: £1280
Conversion & Registering: £280
Engine Rebuild: £4500

Total: £8270

That one went particulaly smooth, however the first RX7 I did was just over 5 years ago and I got stung pretty bad for that and it nearly ended up costing me £15,000 to get on the road! I wasnt happy.  A bit of a hit and miss im afraid when getting them, most importers are very cautious of them and wont normally touch them, however being my favourite car I could never resist throwing in a bid for one! :D

I used a Toad Ai606 in my fresh import a fortnight ago. Was on the rollers at pip\'s the other day and he didnt report any problems with ignition breakdown. (see below)

Can\'t help with the installers, The company I used, specialised security, used to trade on ebay but he got ****ed off with travelling all over the UK so took a job installing with a set 30 mile radius close to his house. Can\'t blame him really. Installation was top knotch too. He asked if I wanted it installing in such a way to avoid \'the myth\' of ignition breakdown.

Clifford Concept 650 best all round alarm...Clifford Matrix is good aswell

For a decent alarm your looking at roughly £350-400 fully installed

HTH :Thumbs-up

Cheers for the replys.  I was normally paying GAP to do a couple of cars at a time so got a discount, but i was thinking i\'d have to pay around £400.

I do like clifford but i\'ve had nothing but problems with them, mind you that was with the old concept 50 ones, which I believe they\'ve improved on.

Rzla

sigma is a good alarm system
look into them

I have cliffors alarms on all my cars exept for a toad on the merc which is sh!t...never had any problems with Clifford. I have a laserline fitted to an fd years ago for cheap and thats a good cat 1 alarm too...
