ok, i had a quick search on the forums and couldn\'t find anything of relavance

The gearbox on my N/A FC is quite quite sloppy and sometimes can be hard to get into gear, especially when shifting down into 3rd. Anyway the other day when my dad was driving the car, when he went to pull off he couldn\'t get the car into any gear, though after a while he managed to get it into 4th, which he pulled a way in. The car was warm at the time and he says its still rather hard to get it into gear. Previous to this i hadnt really had any trouble with it.

Any ideas on what it could be and how it can be fixed? He seems to think that the problem is related to the clutch not disengaging properly does this seem likely? Also i was planning on changing the gearbox fluid soon, so would this help with the problem?

cheers

Where in Bucks are you?  I know of a gearbox expert in Bletchley - he\'ll diagnose it for you no problem.  (trustworthy guy too)

not sure if you can check by sight - but when you press the clutch - is the slave cylinder moving ok on the top of the gear box ???

I had a similar problem - it turned out to be the pilot bearing.  Clutch was relatively new in my case hence discounted it.  I found that if the car was allowed to cool down, the gears came back again. The symptons are difficulty in selecting gears, and difficulty getting out of a gear once your in gear.

Could be any of:

Bent/Damaged Release fork on clutch housing
Clutch Master or Slave cylinder
Split Clutch hose (runs along the back and top of the engine bay)
Low Clutch fluid level in resevoir
Damaged Clutch
Pilot Bearing
GearBox.

As someone said, does the clutch pedal go down too easily ?,  Does it stick to the floor ? Any sign of fluid around Clutch Master or the slave cylinders ?

Just take a half hours drive up the motorway and take it to this guy in Bletchely.  He will diagnose it for free.  The time taken for you to \'get an idea\' is probably the same as what it would take you to drive there and back but at least you would know for sure and get a quote to fix it at the same time  :cool

If you do decide to go up there give them a call first and make sure Ralph will be there.  He is like a gearbox God  :god    ;)      I think the company is called BET Transmissions?   Its Barton Rd, Bletchley.

Thinking about it you could just call him and he may be able to give you some idea on the phone??    Search Yell.com, they are in there.

ok cheers, though i would quite like to look at the car myself. the point of the car was to get used to maintaining and fixing it myself, though i understand that fixing it may be well out of my league, id at least like to have a look :D

Also do you actually know this guy called ralph? because ill be able to mention that you sent me :Thumbs-up

Not really, he come well recommended from a mechanic I know.  We took Cheryls MX5 down there last week as it sounded like her gearbox was on its way out.  He took it out for a drive.  Told us not to worry as the gearbox is fine, said the 5 has a cover around the propshaft, he says this is just catching on it.  As the car is so low she has probably bottomed out and bent the cover slightly.

Anyway, you could say the guy who came down the other week with the stupidly low MX5 that he struggled to get in and out of mentioned him  :WaveBye    The more mechanics realise that they could get just as much business being honest as inventing unneccessary work the better.
