Can anyone tell me what the HEAT lamp on the dash is for, when it comes on etc.
It looks like a symbol of a cat so did it monitor the temp of the cat?
Thanks

Jit

yes, but if you have a PFC it\'s also used as an indication of knock IIRC

Spartacus

Ok, thanks guys, in the US FDs the lamp is a check engine lamp for ECU errors etc.

Jitesh, getting there:Thumbs-up

Jit

Yeah I dont think it works as a check lamp for codes for Jap imports.
sweet...i think ill have to pop over at some point to have a little peek!

What does it mean to have CAT heat? And are the check lamp meant to come on?What is PFC and Knock?

PFC = (APEXi) Power FC Engine management ECU, this is a stand alone ECU and IIRC knock is the same as detonation.

can someone expalin though that if the Heat lamp comes on when detonation/knock is detected and the sensor in the cat then is this where is this detonation happening?!?! in the cat?!?! can it do that?

Jit

when you have a power fc, it uses the heat light in the dash as a knock sensor warning light. ie..when the ECU receives a signal higher than the threshold value set for knock on the PFC map, it sends a signal to the light to flash....

Here is my basic knowledge on what I think knock (detonation) is and how its detected.
The knock sensor is a microphone on the block of the engine which picks up noise so some knock readings can be other noises just in the range of what the microphone picks up, so I believe its a pointer to possible knock but not always 100% still best to get it checked out though.

hope that helps, if you do a quick search you will find loads of stuff on knock on this group.

Cheers
