Pictures and info

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi guys went and viewed the car today,i have pictures of the bad bits and good, would anybody be able to host them for me if i email them??? The rear right wheel arch is rusty but nothing that can\'t be repaired as its still the early stages. There is also surface rust starting to form on the inside lip of the roof (can only be seen with s/roof open). The car started up first time and even when left to cool for 35 - 40 minutes and then started again it seemed spot on.

The d/side door can\'t be opened from the outside as the guy that owns it said he thinks the little rod has come off and fallen into the door, also the d/side pop up light stays up all the time he thinks it might be a motor (doesn\'t know)is this expensive to fix?? .Therewas a very light puff of smoke out of it upon starting but literally only for about 2 seconds and when rev\'d there wasn\'t a puff out of it at all...

The temp gauge went upto halfway pretty quick and stayed there steady, idle was a bit eratic and i thought that it would have been quicker than it was didn\'t seem to have a huge amount of pep, bought it to 5,000 rpm in most gears.He\'ll take 3,500 euros for it and has all the receipts for the rebuild which was done 30,000 miles ago by rotatechnics and jimmy\'s also worked on the car....Sorry for such long thread just not used to these cars and any help and advice is much appreciated...

Could i do better for the money in the UK??

Prof

The small puff on starting is quite normal from a rotary - they start mega rich, so this is basically unburnt fuel !

Erratic idle might be just the TPS (Throttle position sensor) needs adjusting - it\'s quite common for this to go out slightly, tell tale sign is that on warm up, the car will start at 2000 RPM ish, but as it warms up and drops through 1500 RPM, it will hunt up and down until fully warm and idle running at 700-850 rpm.

More of a concern is the lack of \'pep\'.  On a TII, the power should build quite quickly from about 3500rpm through to 4500 rpm, the boost gauge should register right up to the top on WOT (wide open throttle), and you should feel a kick in the pants.  If your not getting that, then the boost is not coming on, and this could be a leaky pipe, hole in the intercooler, dead turbo, boost solenoid not working, or boost sensor is not working.  When it\'s warm, try flooring it in 3rd and 4th gear - particularly up a hill - boost should come on strong.

I take my car to Rotechniks, and they always seem to do a good job for me, so I suspect they didn\'t let it out the door with a dicky turbo. ;)

Hi Prof cheers for the reply, the kick was definately nothing to talk about so i\'m pressuming it may well be one of your above mentioned faults.I do like the car and think it has alot of potential to be a nice car.Would worse case senario be having to replace the turbo or intercooler do you think??

And best case senario being the leaky pipe, solenoid or boost sensor??if so would you have a very rough idea of cost??Just wanna make sure i make the right decision. Also i hear alot of people moaning about the MPG of the Turbo II,how bad is it??

Thanks again Prof and to all that are taking time to give advice and help  :guinness

Probably worse case would be the Turbo - the intercooler is quite easy to change - 4 bolts, 2 large hoses, and a wee small one.  You can pick up good 2nd hand parts for these off the vendors on the site, the for sale section, or dare I say it  - eBay ! :Giggle   I reckon you could get an intercooler for less than £50 - you may have to pay a bit more for the turbo, but to be honest get at least a reconditioned one with a gurantee.

Most of those bits are not too expensive - £20 tops for any of them is all I would pay.

How bad - how heavy is your right foot !  :evillaugh

I get 25 mpg in the winter (icy roads - captain sensible), and about 15 mpg in the summer  :D

Having said that, my car is my daily driver, and has probably been no less reliable that any other car my friends have been running. - Plus it has excellent smiles to the gallon :D :D :D  :Thumbsup!
