Removing Downpipe Shield

Not sure if i was being stupid, but what an absolute BAS***RD of a job.

we were taking the down pipe off... looked in the manual and it said remove the heat shield, to show the bolts....ended up taking the y-pipe off in the end???

ius this usuall??
