Well what a day. Left Milton Keynes at midnight, got to the chunnel in plenty of time, but uh-oh, why is one of the trailer wheels on which my rex is riding covered in greese and oil ?
I got the trailer through on the train, then parked up to investigate in Calais. I jacked up the trailer and the wheel and hub just fell off. One of the bearings eaten through, thank goodness I heard it squeaking instead of it happening at 70.
So plan D, left the trailer with a capable mechanic in Calais, asked a mate to drive my Freelander and drove the Rex to the Ring myself.
Great drive, although problem 2 arises : Getting a whirring from the back end. Not more bearings surely ? It\'s a singing, then whirrs more the car speeds up. Rear diff ? How do I check the oil level ? Got semi-slicks on it, rear diffuser, tein monoflex, could the laser wheel alignment that was slightly out of spec due to the ride height cause the tyres to make that noise ? Maybe it\'s always made it, just the parcel shelf and plastic piece above the bins being removed makes it more audible.
I dunno. Been up 41 hours now, making no sense, just want to be able to enjoy the ring without the worry that the car is now gonna have a wheel fall off or the diff lock and send me into the armco again.

Any help as always well appreciated !

Cheers,

Mart.

the wheels are easy to check, just jack it and grab it with both hands and push/pull it each side, if there is play then you have a wheel bearing gone. Mine was quite loud, but it still went to the ring, round it and back and its not much different.   They shouldnt get shot that quickly.

As for the diff, the filler is at the back, there are 2 plugson the side, the lower one is the fill level,  remove it, stick your little finger in the hole, if you feel oil, then its full.   If its safe, jack it from the diff, start it and drive it in gear with the rear wheels off the ground, see if you can hear anything from the diff. you shouldnt really hear much.

I thought the semi slicks were a little more noisy that normal tyres but not sure due to my wheel bearing noise.

good luck, i hope you get it sorted
400 BHP - 650 KG\'s = 616 BHP Per Ton of Rotary Power

That\'s the way to do it! :Thumbsup!

Think you mean the higher one is the fill level, the lower one is the drain plug.
Had a long day?:guinness

I thought the diff was like the gearbox with a drain at the bottom of the casing and then 2 plugs on the side, lower one to check the level and higher one to fill it.    You should have one on your garage floor   ;)     so i suppose you are right   :god
