For the second time my downpipe nuts have come loose (engine end), bottom 2 are missing, is this a common problem or was my downpipe just put on badly :)

First time it went I put it back on myself, didnt use any loctite or anything and used some spare nuts I had to hand as I was very short of time/resources (show next day IIRC), this time I will do it properly loads of loctite and some decent nuts (BTW ive heard that you shouldnt use nylocs cos the plastic bit melts and they come loose, is that right?).

Anyone know the size of the nut save me going back out in the wet :D

hi temperature applications need metal locking nuts. Philidas is a brand name I have seen used a lot in industrial applications.

Ta mike, shall get hold of them bad boys or something similar

The type of metal used is also very important, with the wrong materials the nuts work loose due to differing expansion rates.constantly going through repeated heat cycles causes this phenomenom.

Depending on where in Essex you are, go to Basildon and Hayward and Scott\'s. They make custom exhaust systems.

Speak to Iain there, he\'ll sort you out the right stuff.

That makes sense, cheers for the help fellas.

I can get to 3 of the nuts, the top/rear one looks a swine, is that a y-pipe removal job to get to that one, or do I just need some better tools :)

Im not very close to basildon but i\'ll try a simiar place somewhere local

Fish

Shouldnt need to remove the Y pipe, but might be worth removing the steering column.

ah i see, did think that would be helpful to remove when I was looking from underneath. Can I just unbolt it and re-attach when im finished or is there more to it
