Curiosity more than anything...but how legal are decats?

If cars post 92(?) have to meet certain emmission levels, to achieve this, car manufacturers use cats, since the technology of combustion engines isn\'t good enough to meet these levels.

Therefore, if it is a legal requirement to meet these emission levels, if you\'re using a decat pipe are you infact on the road illegally (since emissions will inevitably be over and above the legal limits)? And if so, are you covered by insurance etc?


Or are emission levels purely voluntary, and car manufacturers actually put cats on their cars out of their kindness to the environment?! (:rolleyes:  - yea, right!!)

i think i read somewhere that imported cars that where manufactured before august 1995 dont need a cat to pass UK emissions tests.

I can confirm the 1995 date, Mine basically has a 5 inch stainless drainpipe with HKS written on it. It just had its first MOT and I was bricking the emmisions as it is running richer than a hell. MOT man confirmed pre 95 no worries

I can also confirm if its a pre 95 import and isn\'t in the MOT emmisions database it gets tested as a non-cat car.
A lot of test stations do the standard cat test and when the car fails they don\'t do a re-test putting if car specific details.

Best thing is to find a friendly test station and watch over them when they do the test.

If your de-catting post 95 cars you\'ll just need to put the cat back in for the test.
