ive got my rx7 coming over soon from Japan. i have been told that if the ecu cannot be changed that i will need a power fc to sort out the fuelling, as that ecu can only be tuned in japan.

is it possible to get it tuned from japan so it works ok on fuel here???

just a thoght

It will depend on your mods, if pretty much stock you may get away with the ecu on it just running on optimax, if how ever its mods are more serious then they would only be guessing in japan and could be even more damaging to guess at a map.

babz_audio

mods are single turbo HKS T0R, big intercooler, exhaust, filter, blow off valve, uprated ecu,two step boost controller, and ive been told easy over 350 bhp

looks like it will have to be be a mapping here. i dont know much about them so the more information i get the better...

when it comes over would it be okay to just run it on optimax or would i have to get stuff done to it???

Its hard to say, with that list of mods on there, you would have to assume that its been prof mapped, so just for running around, optimax and a low boost setting would be ok, but if you start gunning her and flexing your boost then without knowing the map you could be playing with fire. Use her gently until you get her mapped properly, as you dont know the map or importantly the condition of the engine.

I would guess that it already has an aftermarket ECU of some sort.

First thing as Gary has said is, once it arrives get to a rolling road and get them to check if it is running lean. I doubt that it will be, but better to make sure.

Jap tunners like to pure excess aounts of fuel in their maps.

For mapping in our area i would deffo recommend Pip at WGT engineering, its where i\'ve done all my stuff to my rx:)

Is the two step boost controller built into the ecu?Does it adjust via a switch connected to it?Do you know the make?If it is as above it sound like a Redom ecu, need to be sure of make first.I had one on my fd years back when i first starting tuning it, it wasnt very good on fuelling, car ran very lean with similar mods to yourself.Fitted an AIC in the end, made around 380fwhp.
There are quite a few different Redom ecus though i think with a range of maps.As said, it needs to go on dyno to check or fit wide angle lambda and drive it.

i have been told that the engine is in very good condition and the car runs well, as a friend of mine has actually seen the car up in Japan not long ago, but his knowledge of rx7s is about as good as mine:D

i will definately get it straight to WGT as i have heard good feedback about the company.

my mates rx came over and due to fuel problems he ended up needing a rebuild, he never used optimax...it is in the other section, the rebuild was carreid out by Wav, he has done an sticky thread about it...

will the mapping giv me the bhp read out aswell? how much does this cost?

Pip at WGT is very good, highly recommended. His rolling road only goes up to 200bhp though so he can map it no problem but you wouldnt get an accurate bhp figure.

Pip usually road map\'s the rx\'s as mine was done this way too;)

I didnt know that, last time i used Pip for mapping work was about 2-3 years ago.He uses wide band then or??????If thats the case then he has no means of giving a bhp figure?????
Your ecu may not be a mappable unit though which means he will not be able to change it.If it needs more fuel for example you will have to either use some form of additional inj controller or buy Power FC. Power FC being the better option, infinite adjustability for future mods and the prices you can get them for these days it would probably be cheaper anyway.
Have you got EGT or AFR gauge in the car already, another good way of telling how engine is running.
As you have said, get it sorted straight away make sure it is running good, timing, fuelling or you will end up like your friend with a rebuild on your hands.

babz_audio

the two stpe boost controller is an additional button in the car.

what is a EGT/AFR gauge?

i would probably buy the power fc, when you say they are going cheap, about how much are we talking about? last i read they was about £600 i think.

how much are we talking for a mapping and also how much can i expect to pay for a bhp read out? where can i get bhp read out done?

sorry for the questions...im new to this :wave

Need to find out make of ecu to be sure what sort it is,type of map, etc.

There was someone on this forum a while back selling Power FC with Commander for £595 but i think that was only for a short period.Look on ebay, put thread in the Wanted section,if you look around enough you can normally find second hand ones.Friend of mine just got one off Ebay for £250.There is two types depending on year of car (approx up to 95\' is 8 bit and after 95\' is 16 bit) so make sure its the right one.

EGT is Exhaust Gas Temperature

AFR is Air to Fuel Ratio

Amount of mapping time depends on how modified the car is,who is mapping it,how they are mapping it(dyno or road), the list goes on and on.Say you use Pip at WGT to map your car,he can give you a estimation of mapping cost by considering amount of mods, only an estimation though cause every car/engine is different. If you have problems with the car during mapping it can raise the cost.Make sure car is 100% before you have it mapped, everything works properly, boost controller, any fuel devices, fuel pressure is correct,etc,etc,etc...........  Mapping is the most important part of tuning.

Find your local rolling road, just ask for a power run.Mine cost me £15, 2 or 3 runs to get an accurate figure if the rolling road you use is properly calibrated which it should be.Take a friend with any type of stock car, no mods at all.Bhp and torque should be spot on or close to manufacturers listed figures.Depends on age of car, etc, etc.Figures come out right you know that rolling road is correct so your figures will be also.
