Hi Guys,

I had the Air-con re-gased on my FD at the weekend - it hadn\'t worked since I got it, but learnt quickly that life is not good without it!  Just wondering if it is normal for a very noticable drag on the engine, when your just crawling, everytime it cuts in and out (about every 15seconds or so). I know it\'s power sapping, but didn\'t expect to really notice it!

Cheers
Phil

air con is a huge drag fuel consumption will suffer and engine response will be dull

although MPG also gets raped from having windows down so air con is still my preference any day of week although i digress i did notice a slight performance gain when i disconnected mine in my old scoob but unless i was getting desperate for a few gee gees then the anti Betty swollock device stays!http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008\' target=\'_blank\'>http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_6_200v.gif\' border=0> lol

Check the studies on the AA site and as Si says Air con is no worse on the MPG than having your windows down and at least you don\'t get blown to shit!

You\'ll can loose up to 5% power with the air con on (only when the compressor is actually running though) although with a higher power car like the FD this is likely to be less.

To be honest I can\'t really notice any difference up the "top end" with the air con on. It is noticable in crawling traffic but I\'d put that down to lack of torque on the rotary at low revs and no boost.

I done just over 600 miles this weekend, all with windows up unless <40mph and no air con and all at <3000rpm to try and save a few quid.

I got so hot and sweaty, I feel like ive lost a few pounds from it!

although i should add i noticed it on the scoob when it wasn\'t actually belted up http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008\' target=\'_blank\'>http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/7/7_5_121.gif\' border=0> so i dont think it\'s so much the being on or off thing merely whether it is actually putting extra friction or wotever off the pulleys etc.....Dunno for sure & as i say was negligable but maybe worth just taking the air con belt off if doing 1/4 or sumin & yer clutching at straws for a few split bits of a second or sumin
Si (making it up as he goes along so believe at your risk..... lol)

Just did ~19.5mpg (280 miles on 65 litres) - town, traffic jam, blatting and NSL roads.  Some of that was even 3 up with luggage!!!  Was taking it a bit easier than normal mostly though - wanted to watch the muppetry displayed by the other drivers and they didn\'t dissapoint!

Usually get arounf 15-17 mpg though - air con doesn\'t seem to make a noticable difference to the FD.

Have any fds got a sun roof?
Anyway I used air-con for a 50mile round trip, ended up using near half a tank, it was so damn hot that day.  Didnt notice much power wise as it was twisty roads.

Cant believe that open windows is the same as using the air-con power wise:confused:   the drag must be incredible

The UK assigned FD\'s have sunroofs, not seen one yet though, well not noticed anyway:rolleyes:

Yeah, got a sunroof on mine.  Dont really use the aircon cause I think it needs re-gassing (not just cause im a tight ass then!) How much does it cost do you know?

Gotta use aircon if your hot, opening a window or sunroof is only gonna let more hot air in....
