I read an article about it last night, any of you guys use it to cool your intercooler?

Its excellent when done properly. However its rarely done properly. Cools the inlet charge, prevents detonation, speeds up the critical reaction, meaning more power at the crank. For example, some of the early research in the 1940s showed a water/alcohol mix giving an 80% increase in knock limited power on a supercharged aircraft engine. If you inject pre-turbo as then it gets even better as you can move the compression from adiabatic to near isothermal. Or in laymans terms up to 30% improvement in the compressor efficiency.

And just for the record, I really don\'t give a fig what the aquamist web site says. Aquamist are nice guys who make nice pumps, but they are not in the League of the people who did the original research into this such as Sir Harry Ricardo.

Ive heard great things about water injection, but if you rely on it for your high boost and it fails then your pretty fducked.

I don\'t see relying on it as a problem?

You rely on other parts, such as brakes not to fail, why should water injection be any different!

slightly off topic, but is it possible to use 2 intercoolers, and are there any advantages.

probably a  dumb question:)

Fitted Aquamist kit  to mine last week and it\'s definately reduced my intake temps quite considerably.
At the moment my car is waiting to be mapped and under boost i would often notice the knock warning light flickering, but since fitting the aquamist it has not happened.
A correctly installed system(easy even for a novice)depending on flow rate can have the effect of adding up to 10 octane points.
Higher detonation threshold and longer engine life.
I dont foresee any reliability issues with the aquamist kit,it\'s quite comprehensive.
I know Geff\'s importing a more powerful kit, could be worth considering.

All intercoolers are generally evil things that cause a drop in boost and half the time are interwarmers rather than intercoolers.

I prefer a holistic approach to water injection that dumps the intercooler all together. I am scheming something at the moment.

If you go for serious WI you can gain 18 octane points with the right mix of miscibles.

Hi Bill

you seem very knowledgable on this subject.

Out of interest what sort of money would such a system be?

thanks

Gareth

Depends who you buy it off:-) Doesn\'t need to cost very much at all. Unfortunately many people in the aftermarket take some very simple engineering, stick on some japanese symbols and charge 200% mark-up.

Lets see how my research pans out. I may end up making a product out of it

Bill, scheming is no good, just do it! My car has water injection,no intercooler, and 1.5 bar boost.:)

maximtaylor

How much water are you throwing in Tim?

I am using the middle size jet .6 mm I think. It comes on at 7 psi boost.I use a lot of water!

well there\'s a few hurdles to overcome first. like having a car with a turbo engine in it. Plus I want to have something fully instrumented so I can try different injection positions and look at their effect on the overall temperatures.

And before all that, I have to finish rebuilding Q612UCY properly.
