Hi, just like to pick the brains of someone who knows about these things.
I have a turbo diesel Nissan Xtrail which has a small spilt in the intake hose of the turbocharger just before connecting to the turbo.
The dealership says that oil in the hose is normal but I am wondering exactly how much oil is normal. I get about ½ an egg cup of oil on the driveway after a run, obviously there is more coming out as I drive but how much is anyone’s guess. Oh, the dip stick is absolutely hopeless so can’t be used as a good gauge unless it’s over a long period.
I would have thought that the Turbo oil seal or the egr valve should be looked into but the dealership just want to change the split hose and let the oil through the turbo.

Any thoughts?

i have recently removed the swirl flaps on three 3 litre BMW\'s and they were all quite oily in the inlet track although half an egg cup sounds like a lot for each trip. We used to have a Nissan Elgrand which was a 3.2 turbo diesel and i changed the split inlet hose in that and the pipes were all quite oily to.  How old is it? mileage?

Also, is it the boosted side of the inlet between the turbo and the engine or between the air filter and the turbo?
400 BHP - 650 KG\'s = 616 BHP Per Ton of Rotary Power

That\'s the way to do it! :Thumbsup!

Hi Tony thanks for the reply,
The split is just before the turbo after the air filter, it\'s done nearly 50k miles just over 4 yrs old. The back of the engine bay and the lower part of the engine are covered with oil from this split. As I’ve said there is a small amount on the drive way after each trip but I\'m wondering how much oil is going through the turbo when it\'s being used.  What worries me is that if they just replace the split hose it will mask any problem that might be developing and at the moment I have an extended warranty but it will run out this summer and I don\'t want to be hit for a new turbo or worse  when it could be potentially fixed now.

There is a history of this sort of problem with the mk1 Xtrail but so far not with the mk2 which I have. Just wondering if anyone knows how to tell where the oil is coming from i.e. engine or turbo seals and how much is acceptable.

Sounds like a lot of oil to me....and i\'ve serviced plenty of turbo\'d cars! Oil on a HIGH mile car ( be it petrol or diesel) will pool at the lowest point ........usually at the entrance to the intercooler as this stalls the air flow carrying the oil droplets and then the oil attacks the rubber and softens it....then loss of power due to boost leak etc.....
BUT in your case it on the vacuum side of the turbo. i.e inlet side and 50 k is low mileage...i\'m talking 200k miles on T5 volvo\'s 150k diesels etc.  WHICH make makes me think we are only seeing half the problem....oil leaking pressure side of turbo as well! If it goes its obvious blue smoke lots of...my mates 330D turbo just let go like a fog cloud.

I think it\'s worth paying for a independent assessment mate as if the turbo seals are on they re way prob looking at £1000.00 bill with parts and labour. Are you in AA or RAC as they can do this for you and prob time to read the small print on the warranty.
Hope this helps... Jon

I\'d say the oil in the pipe is normall due to the filthy diesel breather system I\'d suspect the The oil leak is a different part of the car I.e oil return or something,if the oil is In the inlet pipe to turbo it won\'t be turbo Ata probably a breathing issue or pcv problem, egr doesn\'t use any oil and if it is a cooled egr it will be cooled with coolant.
