I might be buying a RX8 soon and to be safe I will ask the seller to bring the car to garage and have a compression test

Got a couple of questions

Will a normal garage be able to do compression test on a RX8? I have read a couple of posts saying this can be done, however I don\'t really understand why 30-35psi compression will end up having a 115 reading?

Will a Mazda dealer be able to do a compression test?

How much would a local garage charge (roughly) for a compression test on rotary engine? And how much will a Mazda dealer charge for the test?

Please advice
Thanks

Doubtful that a normal garage will be able to offer a meaningful compression test, although a thread on here gives details of what can be done and the figures to look out for.

Mazda dealers have been known to charge anything between £45 and £150 for a hot compression test, which should be carried out at 250 rpm. It really is a fairly simplistic test and yet some dealers quote 2 hours or more to complete, which is a nonsense.

Most people find that by shopping around that they can find a dealer who quotes a reasonable sum, or alternatively a rotary specialist will normally charge the lower end at around £45.

In the UK there are a few trusted rotary specialists and looking at your location I would imagine there are many more. :Giggle

First of all welcome to Mazdarotaryclub.com

On top of what Ray has said above, the biggest thing is to check that the car starts after a run to get it hot and then being stationary for around 10 minutes.

If the car starts O/K the compression should be fine,

well my location is set in Japan because I was in Japan last year, and I had a RX7 FD when I registered lol

Now I am in Cardiff but seems like there is no rotary specialist around

went to see the car today, started fine in cold (around 2 seconds tick over and it starts)
then after a run tried a hot start, again 1 or 2 seconds tick over and it started

didn\'t try the \'after 10 minutes\' test

the car seems to be pretty much all standard, however surprisingly the clutch seems to be a non-standard one. the travel and biting point is rather short, pedal is quite stiff it seems like it is an uprated one. I hope the car was not used as a drifter before

Is there anything else I should look out for when buying a RX8?
from what I said, do you guys think the car is ok?

Another good thing is the price. I am using a 99 T reg e46 323 with 94k good nick + around 1700 in exchange, considering my car worths 1800 in market value it means the rx8 is only going to cost me approx 3500

the car is a 54 reg 192 with 47k miles on

seems like I am getting a bit of a bargain? I don\'t even need to go through all the car selling hassle...

cheers

I\'m based in Blackwood and it just so happens i have a Mazda compression tester :D
I won\'t personally charge but i\'d ask you donate £25 to Andy G\'s wife\'s charity run fund as she\'s running the marathon for Marie Currie (not sure if i\'ve spelt this correctly!) This charity helped enourmously when my dad was in his last few weeks so i\'d like them to benefit if that\'s ok.
Give me a call or email and i\'ll get you booked in at a mutually agreeable time.
