Just got this as a pm, and don\'t know the answer (unsuprisingly, as I\'m a rotary noob).

"Well I swapped a turbo2 engine to my toyota starlet and it came with a R-Magic ECU, now I would like to know if this ECU is programmed to work with the OMP already removed???

I currently have the OMP hooked to the ECU but is not attached to the front cover of the engine just hanging in the engine bay and I dont want to remove it in case the car goes into limp mode!

Thanks"

I can\'t see how the OMP would matter to the ECU personally, but I\'m no expert and I know several people have removed the OMP and fitted their own device in (e.g. Prof)...

Any help for the guy?

Thanks!

You might find its been disconnected and the engine is (hopefully) running premix, but they last owner has left the OMP attached so that the ECU \'sees\' the OMP and doesn\'t throw a code?

Noooo, the guy swapped the engine into his Starlet. It had the OMP wired in and attached, I assume he now wants to run premix or similar and is wondering if the ECU will put the car into limp mode if he removes the OMP.

Is the Rmagic ECU a standalone or a piggyback?

papercutout

Standalone. e.g. I have one, unplugged the old ECU, plugged in the new.

dont take this for gospel but..

i think the Disconnecting the omp will just set off the buzzer rather cause any problems (assuming you\'re running premix). Not sure if this is an ecu problem or not.

Has he tried disconnecting the omp and seeing what happens?

The Rmagic is a chip tuned ECU - basically a standard ecu with much better maps - but it does still need the OMP.

If you take it off, it will throw error codes and the car will have no power or top end at all. Some people have taken it off the engine mechanically, run premix but they leave it plugged in out of the way.

There was a guy on RX7 club who was looking at building an OMP \'faker\' to electrically mimic the OMP - but it\'s not quite so easy - electrically there is a stepper motor and a variable resistor - a short/open circuit on either of the 4 coils of the stepper motor will throw an error code, and so will disconnecting the variable resistor or even if it produces odd output values.

You will do no immediate harm if you disconnect it for a few minutes - and you\'ll see exactly what happens. If you do this - reset the ECU by taking the battery off and holding the brake pedal down for a few seconds (discharges caps).

I retained the OMP - but have a Rotary Aviation OMP adaptor - blocks off engine oil supply and allows a 2 stroke feed to be used instead. Advantages of this are clean fresh oil for the oil injectors, meaning no used oil going to clog the OMP up. Also 2 stroke is made to be burnt in engines unlike the standard engine oil.

With a standalone like Apexi Power FC or Microtek you can do away with the OMP
