Whilst stripping, cleaning and painting the rear suspension for my project car I have found that the drivers side lower trailing arm ( the longer one) is bent and has been welded sometime in the past.

I don\'t want to reuse this arm.
Is anyone breaking a series 3 or does anyone have an arm I could buy off them.

If anyone can help, please email me on ian08 at sky dot com

Cheers,
Ian

Not Guilty !
Is it normal to have different length arms or is it due to the repair?

Ian65

Keith,
you\'d never know unless you took the part off the car and cleaned the rust off it!
The upper ( shorter) arms should be the same length as each other and the lower ( longer) ones should be the same length as each other
There isn\'t much difference in these arms but seeing as I\'m doing a complete rebuild, I might as well put in an undamaged one.
You haven\'t got one have you in your 1st gen spares emporium? !!

Non in the shed I\'m afraid, someone on here must have some knocking about.
The other one has cleaned up a treat I must say.

Ian, how are you getting that finish on those arms-I\'m not going quite as extreme as you just doing bushes but wouldn\'t mind painting the stuff that comes off before it goes back on again.

Tim,

I used POR15 rust preventative paint.
This stuff is sold as \'powdercoat in a tin\' and believe me, thats what it is.
It\'s widely used by classic car enthusiasts on suspension parts as it\'s the kind of job that you only want to do once and there\'s nothing better to use.

I used gloss black rust preventative paint and got mine from Frost.
It\'s not cheap but a small tin goes miles and miles. A 473ml tin will easily do a 1st gen suspension. I\'ve done the inside of my wings with it and will do the chassis rails underneath the car.
You don\'t need to prime first but you do need a key\'d surface, it doesn\'t adhere well to shiny glossy surfaces.
I bought a spray bottle of \'metal ready\' as well from Frost to go with this paint. It\'s basically a mild acid solution that etches the surface prior to painting to ensure a good key, a bit like acid etch primer.
The whole lot cost me about £38 delivered but considering how much it does, plus I\'ll be doing the back axle with it as well, it\'s money well spent.

Heres the link to Frost...

This is their info on how to do it...

And some more...

The alternatives always rust through and stuff like hammerite just looks amateurish in comparison.

A word of warning though. Get it on your skin and there\'s no known cure. You\'ll have to wear it until it wears off.

Cheers Ian thats great-I really like the finish you achieved on that arm I\'l get on it tomorrow! Have you had any luck on the polybush front yet?

Oh there are some older contacts as well but after a year or so the car\'s likely to be gone.
Besides, while you car cops are on the lookout for newbies, I\'m onto body parts as well. Promotion from Inspector to Chief Inspector DogboXXocks must be on the cards surely.

I realised yesterday that I can keep a little word notebook on the computer with contacts for parts, :Typing  I can then update it with new entries and then copy and paste into the forum for people, without typing it out every time and worrying about getting telephone numbers wrong.

I haven\'t had chance to fully research the polybushes yet Tim.
I\'d like to use superpro but I want to be sure that a full car set is exactly that.
They are very expensive and I don\'t want to find that I buy a \'full set\' and then end up having to buy more bushes to finish the job.

captainbizzaro

I went to see Tim at RX Motors today to chew over various engine options etc and I asked about suppliers of polybushes-he didn\'t have any in mind but did warn that polybushes aren\'t great for the geometry when applied in some of the arms as the whole system is designed to \'give a bit\'. I might just go with standard types to be honest.

Ian65

yeah, that\'s something else I need to suss out. Some people say to fit standard rubber in the watts link as poly\'s can bind up...  but then others have fitted poly\'s throughout with no problems.... decisions... decisons.

Ian65

At long, long last........ I\'ve finally managed to get my hands on a trailing arm for my project car.
Thanks to everyone who\'s tried to help me out with this, particularly Dave who\'s asked almost everyone who turned up breaking a 1st gen,  Cheers!!
