hi guys

Got another quick question, if I was to buy a car and the engine comes with excellent compression result i.e. 8, with service history records.  Is this good enough to show that the engine if fine? and maintained? Or should I look for anything else?

johnf

Having good compression is very important but a fair amount of engines can go pop due to water seal failure and I don\'t think there\'s any way of \'testing\' the condition of water seals.

These are a rubber compound so on engines that haven\'t been rebuilt they are getting quite old and may perish.

If caught in time not as devastating to the engine as loosing a tip but the engine will still have to come out and be stripped and when it\'s out you might just as well replace as much as you can afford.

I started with nothing and I have most of it left

what about a champion test?

also

another thing is that with a compression test result of 8 would indicate that a recent rebuild had been done?

and also that would the builder also replace/repair the water seals when doing the rebuild?

8 bar is good but without any history you wont know. if a rebuilds been done who knows what was done and on what budget? also if they dont know who did it then maybe it was done in japa using 3peice apex seals which isnt as good

i have spoken to the owner, and he has said that the tips where chnaged at 7000.  is this any good? which is better a rebuild or tips chnaged?

mmm

I got a little confused I assumed that because of the 8 result that it had a rebuild, but now I have been told by the owner that it has had tips changed.

Is this any good? which is better rebuild or tips changed?

sorry

You need the engine apart to change the tips so not changing the other worn parts when building it back up would be plain daft imo.

I would assume that when he said its had the tips changed he means rebuilt mate find out who rebuilt it and give them a ring to ask exactly what was done

Sounds like she has had a refresh..... Basicaly this is a full strip down & rebuild, but using 90% of the original componants! this normaly includes Rotor tips, & rubber seals (water & oil) just using all the original metal componants such as rotor housings, end plates, gear set, etc. so you could find it would be fine for the remaining 60k life expectancy, or you might find that there is corrosion in the waterways that will brake past the water seals resultin in engine failure.... basicaly with out opening it up you will never know :( unless you can speak to the originall builder!!
