hi there, i have fitted a new turbo to my fc and when it came to starting it up everything was fine. i must of done about 20 miles with it boosting fine but when i started to head home the boost pressure seemed quite low, ive got an evc 3 fitted so i turned it up and it didn\'t make any difference, i had a look under the bonnet today and noticied a cir clip on the bulk head i gave my mate a call who supposedly fitted it to the actuator rod and never did. my question is, if the actuator rod comes off doesn\'t it normally overboost? just need to know before i jack it up again. if this is the case what else would cause low boost pressure? any help would this would be much appreciated,

many thanks ben

Prof

If the circlip came off, and the actuator rod slipped off the wastegate flapper, it would do exactly that - flap.  They aren\'t sprung, and it won\'t take much exhaust gas to push the flap open - the turbo won\'t make much boost then.

I\'d check the rod is still on the flapper at the back - it\'s easier to see this from underneath, but you may have to take the heatshield off or undo it to move it a little, and possibly take the downpipe off to get at it.  Should be possible to get the clip back on.

It\'s worth checking that you haven\'t lost a pipe or one of them wasn\'t done up properly - from turbo to intercooler, the bac hose, the bov or recirc hose, and the pipe the other side of the intercooler (if you\'ve a stock setup), otherwise just check all your hoses and pipes are tight.

nice one prof, thanks for that mate just needed to hear it from someone else before i start stripping it down again. dont suppose you know a cause of hunting on idle, only does it when i shut it down and switch it back on?

thanks again, ben

Prof

Hunting idle can be down to vac leaks, but that doesn\'t explain why it happens only when you turn it off and on again.

There is one circuit that operates when you switch the car on warm, the orange solenoid near the oil neck cut\'s vacuum to the fuel pressure regulator to increase fuel pressure (operates for about 30seconds to 1 min after starting) - it\'s supposed to stop petrol percolating in the rails when they\'re hot.  If you unplug the orange connector the Pressure regulator is just connected to vacuum as it would be normally.  You could try that.
