Hi guys I\'m completely new to the Club, but was advised my a few rotary guys to get on it.

I have a Turbo 2, which blew its engine awhile back. I since bought a doner car, took out the blown engine, resprayed the engine bay, put in the working engine from the doner.

While I was at it, as I dont have cats, I removed all the emissions valves and made block off plates in the work shop. I took out the air pump. I also took out the second set of butterfly valves in the throttle body. New intake system, new Blow Off valve system, Taken out all the A/C stuff and fitted Super Advan Rims with 255 cross section rear tyres.

All in all i\'m pretty impressed with myself as I have never done anything like this before, But I am a Mechanical Engeering Student.

I then got the engine going and was out driving. At the end of the trip I noticed the water pump started to leak, another day replacing that.

Now the car went into limp mode! Figured out how to make a check light, made one and found it was the Metering Oil Pump. Check resistance of the stepper motor and found it was shorting out.

So now I have to replace that, luckily I have one. Looking at it it looks tight for space with the water pump housing, So Is it possible to remove the MOP without taking off other stuff? And will I need to drain the Oil?

thanks Guys

you can remove it and run premix with no problems at all

Prof

From what I\'ve read and have word from other uses, you can take the MOP off without draining oil, as it dribbles out at best from the small feeder hole.

Having said that, the ECU still expects to see both the stepper motor (MOP) and resistor (MOP position sensor) and will throw the Error codes and cause the ECU to go into limp mode if it\'s disconnected.

Cant remove the MOP, it will constantly be in Limp Mode! As the Prof said the ECU needs the signal from the MOP. The way a stepper motor works is the coils are activated to produce a step movement, then the position sensor confirms that the correct movement has been made, If not then Limp Mode.

This makes it very difficult (unless elctronics god) to make a device that can pretend to be the MOP. So to remove the MOP it will still need to be plugged in and placed out of the way somewhere. To be honest I want the MOP, incase I sell the car etc.

Ok I dont need to drain the oil and waste my £35 of AMSOIL, thats good. Does it come off then with Water pump housing in place?

yes you can remove it with the water pump in place. You certainly dont need to drain the oil, the feed hole is only about 5mm diameter and sits higher than the sump.  There are a few cars being broken lately so hopefully you should find one.

Yeah I\'ve got a MOP now and bought the O-ring, going to fit it tomorrow.

I also put  2 cycle oil into the fuel at around a 150:1 ratio, this is because the way I see it, it will take time for the oil to pass through the Oil injection lines once they have been drained. Just a pre-caution. Once I\'m happy I\'ll just fill up will neet fuel again.

no harm in running both anyway, a lot do.

Especially if the oil system fails you need a new engine...so best to have a backup :yes

i took mine off,  although its the fd engine and that runs ok. not in limp mode

New MOP is now fitted, and No more Limp Mode!!!

Was an easy job to be fair, and as soon as the old one came off I could see the problem. The stepper motor outter casing was cracked and falling apart.

It drives which is good, Now MOT time, Might need to run the Premix empty and get a tank of Optimax to pass emissions!!

Excellent news there chap. Nothing is that hard on these cars if you have the patience and good tools. Seems a few have had the old OMP problem lately. I am going totally 2 Stroke but will still rely on the OMP as a pump only. Oil will come from a seperate reservoir.
