my egi hasn\'t been used for 3 weeks as it has a starting problem which i hav\'t been around to fix. Will if be bad for the engine if i just start it? I\'m probably being stupidly protective of her, i just want to be sure :D

cheers

How will you start it, if it has a starting problem ????

pdtaylor18

if you are on about just turning it over then that will be a good thing as it will get the fluids moving and stop the build up of any sludge etc. What starting problem have you got anyway, no point having a problem for 3 weeks........ thats what the forums for !!  we\'ll get you going again.

well its got a corroded starter solenoid connection.

was being temporarily fixed by the the odd nudge, then 4 weeks ago it got so bad the nudge wouldn\'t work, so i had to push start it a few times.

fixing it shouldn\'t be a problem its just i didnt have to to do it before i came back to uni.

so in answer to martini.

if i can\'t fix the starting issue it will jump started so i can take it to rotechniks, otherwise a standard start

lol.. I also appear to be having starting problems after it\'s been sat for a while.. bought a brand new set of plugs for it and fitted them yesterday to try and cure it.. and now it\'s not even turning over, just whizzing like I\'ve removed the plugs completely.. so gonna try it with the old ones again and work out what I\'ve done wrong.. grrrrrrr

are the turbos as hard a work as the egi\'s ??

sounds flooded. The extra fuel washes the oil away, and then compression falls. You will need to remove the connector to the fuel pump near the left back shock tower. Now you need a way to get some gearbox oil into the chambers. Luckily on the FD, a tiny syringe will do it by removing boost gauge and bolw off valve pipes. I cant remember if the EGI has something similar.

errr, the EGI has no turbo! ?

posam

I know.. I was considering finding a turbo if they have less problems with the ignition lol...

Ok.. shall have a little search around for the fuel pump relay.. for now I\'ve removed all the sparks.. and am seeing if that\'ll help some of the fuel evaporate.... lol.. mechanic I am not..

Could I inject a small amount of oil in through the spark plug holes ??

and if so any recommendations on how much and what grade ??

ok temporarily fixed the starting problem and started the car fine, i just played about with the wires on top of the starter motor and it was fine, plan to take it ou and clean it all up at some point...

so anyway, is it a bad idea to just start the car after 3 weeks of no use?

Most RX7\'s may have months of no running !!  comes with the rotary i\'m afraid.  I have had several engines that have spent months idle and have started just fine. I do however squirt some oil via the plug holes and rotate it a few times. I have a spray can of oil so it covers everything. You dont need much. I go away for sometimes two moinths at a time and as long as my battery is fully charged then it will fire up. You are worrying over nothing.

after a lot of farting about I got mine going again... god it\'s good to be back behind the wheel....

In the end I removed the battery and the sparlk plugs and took them indoors.. battery went on charge overnight.. spark plugs got whacked with the hair dryer for about 5 minutes till they were all toasty warm and dry, then left in some kitchen roll...

The following evening I refitted the battery (terminals before were very loose which can\'t have been helping.. they pulled off without undoing the nuts... ) did the nuts up tight.. removed the egi injection fuse from next to the battery, connected my battery up to the mrs hyundai with some jump leads and span the engine over about 10 to 15 times till it stopped spraying fuel.....

I then got my turkey baster out again, dropped some oil into the bottom plugs and turned the engine over yet again a few more times to smear it round...

After that I topped the petrol tank up with about a fiver\'s worth of petrol.. to make sure I had enough to get it to the garage if it did get started again...

Re-inserted the spark plugs, re-inserted the egi fuse, made sure all the connections were in the right place.. and leaving it on the jump leads went and crossed my fingers...

Throttle pedal to the floor- not pumping though, and turned the keys..

Voila we have ignition... and engine life...

billowing clouds of smoke out of the exhaust, I think a mixture of all the unburnt fuel, oil and condensation from where it had been sitting for a while.. took about 5 minutes to clear up... kept it going between 1500 & 2000 rpm... for about 10 minutes, before very uncertainly easing off and hoping it wasn\'t gonna stall.. rev\'s dropped right down to 500.. but it idled there and didn\'t stall. so I went and removed the jump leads, closed everything up.. and then took it for a nice drive...

All I need to do now is replace the two back tires and I\'m good to go... (one has a screw through it.. which I\'ve left in as it\'s plugging the hole temporarily.. the other seems fine but both are getting low on tread and might as well replace both at once...)

Happy bunny....

dthebuk

all going well.. I\'ve still got to make a couple of brackets for the seat side of the shelf.. but it stays in place quite well balanced on the petrol and water can I have in the boot at the moment so not too fussed lol

I fancy a weekend of tinkering.. but am working most of this weekend coming, and the next.. so we shall see what i can get done in the evenings instead..
