Quote from: Jonathan_FJust my tuppence, I haven\'t posted in a year or so due to various commitments, but the cost of standard parts is prohibitive for engines. I know the price that the engine builders pay for parts, its a third of the price you and I can get. I paid 2k for my rebuild in parts, and now, with new contacts, could get the lot for 600. And the rotary engine is a very simple build. I have built piston and rotary engines, and rotary\'s have far fewer components. No cam drive, pistons, rods, balancers to assemble. No tappets to gap, expensive cams/valves etc to purchase. Just a die grinder and a porting template (simplification). It took me about 40hrs to remove, strip and rebuild and replace my engine. Assuming I paid 1000 for housings and seals etc and charge 4k for the engine, thats £75/hour. Not bad. Assuming I get twice as fast with practice, i\'m laughing.

Ergo, I\'m in the wrong business!

My point is, second hand RX7 values are inversely proportional to engine rebuild prices.

Hi Jonathon,
Not sure where you are getting your rebuild parts from but I certainly don\'t get them for very much less than anyone else can,and to say that engine builders can get the parts for a 3rd of the price that they retail for is a long long way from reality.Mazda give a max of around 10% discount for the amount of parts that we buy,and even from Japan direct with the duty it\'s still pretty near to the price over the counter.
If you really are able to get your parts for one third of the cost here with all duties and tax paid then please let us all know where from and we can pass the vast savings onto the cutomers.

i have to say labour rates even small garages are 50-70 an hour so do the maths say a day to get it out and in again 560.00 minimum then another day and a half to strip and rebuild 800.00 giving min labour of 1400.00 then you have to factor in the overheads of the garage as no one can just work for minimum turnover or they go out of business so just labour wise and a bit of profit garages have to charge 1500 labour and then parts..it soon mounts up
thats only working on 20hrs labour add ur parts on and bingo thers the rebuild cost

Ref: Rebuilds.

Now there are five or six professional companies offering rebuilds and as far as I know they are all around the same cost.

If it were economical to offer a rebuild sevice considerably cheaper I would think at least one of them would be offering it, or someone who thinks it\'s easy money would set up there own business and undercut their costs by 25%, easy money.

Think of all the work you could get being 25% less than anyone else.

My guess as to why this hasn\'t happened it that the general price these guys charge is about right.

Big step to sign up on a lease, rates, staff, equipment, insurance, heat, light, the list goes on.

John
I started with nothing and I have most of it left

what about atempting to rebuild the engine before its blown.

as im guessing u dont get the same amount of damage to the engine this could save money? though im not expert, just an idea :D
