Quote from: Andrew HarperOh yes, if you have an unlimited supply of £££££ you could buy a Phase Linear Aliante Shallow Sub. I did look at one of these but you need a high quality audiophile amp (maybe Genesis Monoblock) producing at least 600w to make the thing even move.

Ooo was going to suggest the old Infiniti range too, until the Bish beat me to it.  Green cone and black surround as I recall.  Expensive but v shallow for the time they entered the market.

Also at the same time their were the Linear Phase ones mentioned above.  My mates ICE shop sould these (although not sure if anyone could afford to buy one).  I think the manufacturers bragged that you could load them up with whatever power you wanted!  The LP amps needed a seperate power pack too!  Once saw one of the 12"s ran with one of their amps and power unit, and a hell of alot of power going through it.  Sweet!

Just reading around, and wouldn\'t mind a little more bass (like the MkII mR2, excellent sound setup in there!), so would something like this be any good:

Only needs 80mm mounting depth apparently...

u could bin the spare wheel and use the well to put your box in?

What size are the rear-quarter speakers on RX7s? Genesis (one of the best audio manufacturers, and British, too :D) make 6x9 subs and they sound awesome - I listened to them in a new Mini and thought they were a pair of tens in the boot!

They\'re designed to be used on parcel shelves with some dynamatting and decent mounts, so would be ideal for the rear quarters, and you save your boot space. They only need 100-150w rms each too

Anything that will fit under a car seat will sound ****e and pathetic to be honest

looked at this for under the seat and i only just managed to fit my sat nav ECU which is only 1" thick !!!  remember about sliding the seats back and forth as this just might upset your plans.  you could always be clever and try to build them into the seats or do as i did and built a sub box to fit behind the seat between the two suspension towers. had two 8" subs and tweeters in there.  Might have kept the pattern but it\'ll only take a few hours to measure and trial fit with cardboard.

Rears are 5 x 7\'s, I guess you could get 6 x 9\'s in there with some chopping about, there\'s a bit of room in there.

But I\'d not want big booming bass, just something to give a little more depth, the bass tubes are pretty good for that, but again would like to keep all the space (moon on a stick!).

Think I\'ll just live without TBH ;)

Don\'t get me wrong, they\'re not boomy as genesis are aimed at sound quality not spl. They\'ll fill out the sound nicely at lower volumes too

Could you not go down, through the floor? If your after a sub woofer, current theory is you only need the one.
Whats under neath the floor where the seats are? maybe you can cut a nice big hole in the floor, weld a suitable box in, and mount your subwoofer in that?

RemarkLima

I think the floorpan is just a single skin, or not much thicker than that so no room to go down.

I think the best best would be something bigger in the rear side panels or maybe in the passenger footwell. I was thinking if you could get something decent under the dash in the 5th speaker position but I doubt there\'s much room.

You won\'t get the Genesis ones in there without building some fairly hefty custom mounts - they\'re too deep to fit into an enlarged standard mount. I measured that as this was my first idea as well.

Plus, the other downside is that they really want to use a boot as the sub box and have to be sealed accordingly to sound good - but they sound superb if set up properly.

Genesis is a proper British car hifi manufacturer, not a manufacturer of tools to remove your rear number plate and rear window :D.

What I\'d be tempted to do is try to get a set of small - something like 6" - subs that you can run free air (most subs don\'t work very well free air, though) and mount them in the place of the rear speakers. In fact, that\'s my current plan...

Saw this and it reminded me of this thread..

2.8 inches deep including amp/box/the lot.. Likely one of the closest things to fit if they sound any good!!

tbh I dont think any sub that can fit under your seat can be great, I have experienced many subs and to be honest the under seat ones just dont cut it.

yogibear

Hmm, you are all looking at this wrong guys. Its not so much the size and depth of the sub but the shape and design of the enclosure that makes the bass really thump. Ive worked with large PA for the past 15 years and the difference between enclosures is the main factor in the sound you are gonna get. After that it is the ammount of air the the speaker can move. Also you need to consider the sensitivity of the speaker as well as that is basically how lound it is. Also the type of music you are gonna be lisening to make a difference. If you are gonna be lisening to fast dance music then its better to go for a smaller driver such as a 10" sub as it can react faster to the quick beats. A 15" or an 18" will move a lot more air but but dont move as quickly if that makes sence.

I very much doubt you could get a sub to fit under the seats let alone a box to houses it wihich would be of the right volume. Cutting out the floor would be an option if you really really need to mount them there but do you really need bass that badly that you want to cut the floor out of an FD. A custome enclosure where the back seats are would give you a lot more options as who really uses the back seats anyway.

I think you guys are talking about "boomshakaya rumblin\' bass mon!", in which case, yeah, the rear seats / boot is fine ;)

My preference is more for something to help out the, uprated, yet not to hot standard sound system, even with decent 7x8\'s in the back and some nice 17cm\'s in the front, it still lacks any bass especially on motorways etc... So would be after soemthing just to give it a little kick.

In the summer I was thinking about doing something with one of the thin subs but somewhere in the passenger footwell... Maybe... If I get time ;)
