How much tax do you pay on a car if you imported it form japan direct frmo the auction. ie if a car was 20k on the auction what would it work out with all the other costs for it to be fully landed in the uk with the sva done.

Many thanks

20k.  To simplify well assume thats on the boat and Jap derestriction and transport to docks is taken care of.

Then you have £500 shipping

20,500

Then 10% import duty

22550

Then 17.5% VAT

26500

Then UK customer clearance, not sure on price of this.

MOT £35
SVA?  not too cheap, well say 150
Any SVA or MOT work will need to be done too.

Then vehicle registration £150

Plus whatever fee your agents are charging too.

So a 20k car in Japan will be about 27-28k on the road here.

cool, thats helpful cheers mate

If it cost £20K GBP at auction i.e. 3,800,000 Yen, then roughly:

Cost 3,800,000
Auction fee/FOB fees 80,000
Shipping 100,000
Insurance 40,000

total 4,020,000 yen, say 190 yen to the GBP£ = £21,130

On entry to UK; import duty at 10% i.e. £21,130 x 1.1 = £23,243

Then VAT on the lot i.e. £23,243 x 1.175 = £27,311

Plus a few quid for customs clearance etc.

Add: SVA test, £150 I think, plus prep work and 6 months tax.

Soon adds up!
