Hi all,

This is my first post since joining the club having bought a 1982 RX7 in silver the other week (from ebay - the temptation was too great!). Is in great condition with only 46500 miles on the clock, and only cost £1500. Really enjoying driving it.

I have a couple of questions, with which I hope someone may be able to help:

1. How long should the choke normally be needed in the current climate? Mine only needs to be out for a maximum of 20-30 seconds, before being pushed fully in.

2. I think the exhaust has a slight blow from near the front, can anyone recommend a good aftermarket system to replace it? Also, I have noticed a slight pop from the exhaust when switching the engine off after a a long run (i.e. engine up to temperature), could this be due to air being sucked in to a hole in the exhaust, or is it unburnt fuel (I understand that the original system uses an air pump to complete combustion of unburnt mixture in the pipe and therefore reduce exhaust emissions)?

Thanks in anticipation of your help.

1)  I have no idea!  But I\'m sure some peeps with 1st gens will let you know. :)
2) It depends on how loud you want it to be, being pre 1986 you can get away with fairly high emissions (check with you MOT station) so its possible to go for a full exhaust system, prices range from a few hundred to over a thousand depending on where you go and what type of system you want.  I would recommed contacting some of the Vendors at the top of the page, if they cant sort you out no one can!
3)  Welcome to the club! :wave :D

Thanks Brett, I intend to keep the car for a long time (despite having a baby on the way!) as it\'s in such good condition. I will save the pennies and invest in a decent stainless system I think.

Ant,

1) I tend to leave my choke out for a couple of minutes and then push fully in.  The elctromagnetic release on mine is broken so it is all manuall operation.

2) I would suggest the old Elford style Stainless Steel exhaust.  When I bought mine 9 years ago I understand that Rotecniks had the license for them however I had mine oredered and fitted by Tim at RX Motors.  I suggest you give him a call to find out about price and availability.  If these are not readily available he will certainly be able to advise on current best alternative.

While I was looking at exhausts I noticed that the Rotechnics one was made by Tiger (someone i know bought one and sent me some photos + details of it) ... I think Shy auto can get hold of Tiger exhausts ... might be worth a ring to find out ?

Not sure on the choke, I usually pull the choke right out to start it, then once started let it back in till it ticks over at about 1500rpm and then let the auto choke thing do its thing.

Or I should say I did use to do that as its all being junked for EFI :)

Thanks guys, I may have a fiddle with the mixture settings on the carb just to make sure it\'s not running rich or something (probably not as doesn\'t seem to be using loads of fuel).

Brett

What?!? A rotary NOT using loads of fuel!?!  :D

Doesn\'t seem as bad as I was led to believe for fuel consumption. Have a Civic and a Jazz for day to day use though. :)

Do IDA \'s have chokes ?.. :cool only joking...when the engine rhythm(sp) changes push the choke in,i.e.start it,oil press up,drive it....NIKKI carbs have the habit of overfueling when tampered with...that why when you shut off you have the "boom" out the ass end, just unburnt fuel lying in the exhaust...being old school thats cool....welcome brother

My brother has the Rotechnics one on his 1985 1st gen. The piping isn\'t any biiger than the stock exhaust. Also his back box is really zingy now for some reason.

Have had it up on ramps and not been able to find any obvious blows from the exhaust, so am gonna spend my days off tinkering with the mixture.
