I just bought my FC 1987 with 54k on the clock, I’m pleased to have my ass back in an RX7 after 17 years absence.

So it’s in pretty good condition BUT its 20 years old SO I’m thinking let’s make it better

Here is the list of things I have to do... by the way, i have a shoestring budget
   * denotes no advice needed ** denotes help requited (thanks)

1) * Couple of new tyres two old ones are nasty recon about £110 fitted
Dunlop SP200E to match the front I think
2) **The steering is very heavy - what should i be looking at - bushes . rack what? What are the likely causes heavy steering on the beasties, and **how much is this going to cost me?
3) *New disks and pads - which I hope I can get factor parts apec or similar **recommended suppliers and factors would be appreciated
4) **Dampers - I’m on the existing ones I think so they are fairly **** cos they are 20 years old, i need help in 3 areas , firstly in recommended parts / suppliers secondly in cost - what will these cost me and thirdly I have found a how to on the rear shox but NOT the front shocks so I could do with some advice on this step by step, also how long will it take for an average diy spanner head to do the job? Also should I consider changing any rubbers or suspension bushes? If so why? the aim is to  have it handling like new,

5) Gearbox is OK BUT it’s not absolutely 100% in the instant selection department , very slightly loose and a bit knotchy, which I seem to remember was normal from my old one - so what would I need to get is as new,  and what cost would this be? and will changing the gear oil and lubing the linkages help (will I need new linkage bushes) - err i know I’m asking questions that seem daft as the reader of this post cant see the car and people aren’t psychic , but what I’m saying is - what are the usual suspects?, you know the bits that are known to have issues.
And finally what would your total guess at overall cost be ?

Last but not least what simple spanner mods could I bolt on to up the power / performance?

  Thanks 2connect :driving

Was that the silver one that was on ebay, located in or near Maidstone?

Real stupid question but does the power steering work?

Ported TII engine with a massive Turbo :D.

More seriously, the usual intake and exhaust may make a difference but in the end you\'re going to have to look into getting the engine ported or similar.

has it got power steering - could be worth checking

if so - is the belt tight

its on the right hand side of the engine if looking from the head light end - seems to stick out a bit

dampers - hummm not sure about this - they arent cheap i can tell you that for nothing !

If its an 87 it may not have power steering.... :wave

Easiest mod is to fit a complete sports exhaust system fromt he exhaust ports back, and remove the air pump. (You will require blanking plates for this)
This will net you a good 20bhp :yes

All big power gains are going to require some porting work :)

I bought an 89 EGi. The power steering was stiff on that. When I got it home I found that the belt was very loose and in need of replacment. I replaced the belt/ re adjusted it and it worked fine. Also worth checking the fluid level. It\'s also worth checking all the other belts at the same time as my alternator belt snapped on me not too difficult to change even with my very limited DIY experience.

If you look on eBay there are some good deals on new discs and pads I sore a listing with 4 grooved discs for £199.
