Hi guys,

Right i have been hunting for a clutch for a while now with no real joy, i currently have two options;

1. Brand new warranted 3 Puck triangular style stage one Exedy from a very reliable Source

2. Used 6 Puck (apparently exedy) clutch - not warranted but cost of £140.

can i have your opinions and experiences as it would be extremely helpful!

i would like it to handle at most 420 at fly/high 300\'s at wheels but currently just over stock power.

The car is no longer a daily drive but sometimes used for short journeys just to keep it in use (weekly) i will be doing some activity/track days this year with some relatively hard launches but not drag racing more than once a year for say 3 runs (every Rotorstock :) ) i am after something with a good strong "bite"  and not too stiff pedal pressure but i am unsure about how a six puck or 3 feels?

i cant determine whether a six puck for example would be uncomfortable as i have never driven one.

If anyone has either of these clutches or any opinion i would be greatful to hear them.

Also if anyone has one they wouldnt mind showing me or letting me drive (i have insurance to drive other vehicles) that would be even better and i tend to travel a bit anyway.

Currently i am favoured for the 3 puck stage one due to the warranty and being new.

Thank you in advance.

had a exedy 3 puck before, it was a pig to drive :spank
now have exedy hyper single(6 puck), almost as easy to drive as a stock one :Thumbsup!

thanks for your advice JJ can i ask what flywheel you are running and how much power? also a few details of cost of your new one and where you bought it? apparently the 6 puck according to old threads is very noisey and a pig to drive which is weird?

thanks,
Tharek

exedy hyper single came with flywheel. i got it from clive.
my understanding is that 6 pucks are always easier to drive than 3 pucks, but could well be wrong here.
car not fully mapped yet, but clive had assured me it\'d support 400 whp with no problem.
let me find out the torque figure listed in the manual for you later.

I have driven a 3 puck and a Six, i would recomend the six (not as snappy) but i guess it also depends on the make and the Presure plate you use? but tthe kits i had a go off where quite heavy and not too nice to use in trafic if you get me.

My mate had a ACT Clutch) Same as this http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41360&highlight=clutch) that was a good all rounder, his car was running 330 at the wheels and it has never had a problem. I would seriously look at one if mine let go.

Wouldn\'t say the 6 is easy to live with. If its a daily the uprated cover will kill your leg in traffic.

Heavy clutch and doesn\'t like being hammered too much, Rotorstock helped me to loose the biting point:D I would say its a bit overkill and if I had the choice in the future I would choose something softer, may a natural double.

If yours was the Single kit, you will have some thing like the Pic below.

Yep thats the one, I\'ve got an Excedy hyper single with lightened flywheel.

I think every clutch has its weakness, Singles are usaly on the heavy side, Twins even though they handle good Hp and are quite light make some bad noises (rattle like mad) so you have to decide which one does what you want it to.

As shaun says its quite easy to over shoot the mark and make your car a pig to drive on the road/Traffic.

thanks guys :)

the exedy one mentioned and pictured above is out of my price range new :( as its over £600 but it is the unwarrented used one i mentioned above that i can purchase for 140 but the fact the tuner is saying he wont warrant it is worrying me.

this is something i do not want to do twice! hence so many questions.

thanks again.

funny enough that hyper singles are actually very light, lighter than other single n twin plates I\'ve driven ;)
ACTs are supposed to be quite good as well I think, but proabably heavier.
What\'s your budget m4drx, if you dont mind me asking?

thats the one :yes

budget for used is low say less than 200 and dependant on clutch itself but  most are offered for 120-140.

Budget for new is £400 cant really push to more as there as a few other things that the car needs just as badly.

basically the clutch i have i dont think is worn out but the rear main seal has gone giving the impression it has. Pedal feels wierd and feels wierd to pull off however hold boost without any slip and can still launch hard with no negative effect but i dont want to travel all the way to a tuner perhaps just to find that it has so i want to go prepared and leave with the car.

i will be taking a spare master and slave cylinder and i already have the rear main seal sorted thanks to bobfish, will be taking a master and slave cylinder and some diff mounts to go on as mine are DEAD which is making drivetrain feel worse.

Got a 4puck clutch/lightweight flywheel in my scoobie and its a bitch in traffic, very grabby and judders alot, but never lets go. Also got a 6puck clutch/lightweight flywheel in my 300ZX much better in traffic. If your not using the car everyday and looking for durability when abusing the ol girl... Go for a three puck.
