Hi peeps.... another newbie question..

I\'ve only had the car a few days and decided to give it a bit of a blast as didn\'t rain yesterday!! *SHOCK* (how lucky was I)

anyway...

when driving around slowly to cool down the car before going back home, i was cruising in 5th and just happend to leave my hand on the gear stick and noticed that the gear stick itself was getting really warm, not far off hot, but the gear knob was fine and no heat at all....

The reason that i am able to touch the gear sticks stick is because the gator has come loose and fallen down around the bottom of the stick. Am i just being paranoid as this is normal and just have never had a gear stick gator fall off before so never touched the unprotected stick?

Is this a normal thing to happen or is it something to be concerned about?:xconfused

(just to add i have a 96 RS FD)

Might be worth checking the oil level in the gearbox itself, just for peace of mind.
The shaft does get quite hot and its not suprising really concidering its very short length.Probably just the heat produced by the gearbox warming the stick.

Its quite normal. My car is stripped out and so doesn`t have a gater or anything and it gets too hot to touch and my gearbox oil is fine.

I hope it\'s normal as mine gets very hot sometimes.

All you have to do is think logicaly........ how hot does the oil get in the box???? 80ish degrees c?? what happent to heat.... it tries to dissepate & metal is a very good conductor of heat, so it\'s bound to get hot!! Obviously this temp & how quick it gets to that temp depends on how you drive!!!

After a long jurney cruising I can feel the heat coming up between the gap in the gater.

If you notice heat from the gearbox area, is good to install heat/sound insulation material over the gearbox area.  Just remove the gear console and paste the material all over the area.  Make sure it is not too thick else you wont be able to install the gear console properly.

You will enjoy less heat and less sound from the gearbox... ;)
