Idle settings, what\'s the one above the oil filter for?

Hey all,

Just had a quick search, but can\'t seem to find something conclusive.

I\'ve basically been sodding around far too much and made thing\'s probably worse, so the car idles fine, but at about 1000rpm, which is a little high.

Now, there\'s the screw with the locknut by the throttle cable, that just pushes against the the throttle plate twisty thingy (great description!), but even with that full out it doesn\'t alway go low enough.

Then there\'s a screw right above the oil filter which I can only turn by hand as it point straight up, this has a spring around it as well and seems to also change the idle but I don\'t know how?

Is there another one that I\'m missing?

Reading here it says about one between 2 dome nuts?

Cheers all!

Yes, there\'s a air bleed screw on the throttle body. It nigh on impossible to see. You might see it if you take of the intake elbow. It\'s on the bottom of the throttle body where you\'ll see a little hole. Screwing it clockwise closes the hole (less air by passing the throttle butterflies), screwing it anti-clockwise opens it (passing more air past the throttle butterflies)

Once you\'ve got a feel for where it is you can get to it while the elbox is still on with a 6" screwdriver.

The FSM says to set the ECU into diagnostic mode by shorting the relevant pins on the diag connector, which stops the ECU from changing the idle itself. Then manually set it to 750 rpm using the bleed and stop screw. When you take it out of diag mode the ECU should then take it back up to the correct 850 rpm.

You\'ll feel then the balance is right between the bleed and stop screw as you\'ll get a nice smooth idle. I also found that the TPS needed adjusting after I\'d played with the stop screw, and this can affect the idle as well if it\'s way out. If you twiddle the TPS around on its adjusters you\'ll find a point where it enables and disables the air pump, and it\'s somewhere around that point that you\'ll find the correct voltage readings.

HTH :)

Cool! Thanks guys.

So the screw above the oil filter, what is that for? As that seemed to change my idle as well...

But kind of randomly. Just seen in the FSM that it\'s something to do with a wax pellet and sets a cam on something to do with the idle.

OK, so I\'m going to have to adjust that when I first start up to get it set right, then once it\'s warm make sure it\'s not engaged.

Then play around with the other 2 (with the jumper in gnd and 10), until it\'s about right, unplug, reset TPS and I should be good to go???

Yup. The screw sets what temp the fast idle is disengaged, and there\'s a cam adjuster as well, but that\'s a PITA to get to.

To set my idle i did the following:

Wound the idle stopper screw (one on the top) so it was not engaging.
Wound the air blead valve all the way in then took it 1/4 of a turn out.
brought the rpm up that little bit with the stopper.

but to do that you NEED to have the car warmed up and the fast warmup disengaged.
I woof in your general direction.
