I was just doing some random Googling and I cam accross this page: http://www.carpage.hu/new020511.html

The text at the top in in Hungarian and I have used an online translation wotsit and got this baffling result!!

QuoteTHE in January , Tokyo readied autókiállításon erstwhile style lively up the Mazda : the from 1967 es Cosmo Sports unworldly utódjaként show up be the Cosmo 21. THE retrograde style tanulmányautó not only formájában and metalline influence utasterében , but technikájában also the your past quote , bonnet underneath innuendo bis köbcentis Renegade Wankel - motor he\'s working. The MX -5 it\'s a success newer issue I\'d like to meglovagolni , since the ferry roadster after RS Coupé article show be small sportkupét. The single only In Japan obtainable pose the open version 1,8 liters , 160 horse-power négyhengerese drives , cabin also the alapverzióhoz similar.

I then went in serach of some further info and found this page with a bit more of an explanation (towards the bottom): http://cp_www.tripod.com/rotary/pg16.htm

QuoteAt the (January) 2002 Tokyo Auto Salon there was a "new" Cosmo! Styled to look like the original Cosmo on this page, it is in fact an MX5(Miata) with a body kit plus an RX8 engine - I understand that it was built by "Mazda Sangyo" which seems to be a subsiduary company that does engineering work, ambulance conversions etc.
I suspect that the "21" means 21st century, because it isn\'t the 21st anniversary of the original Cosmo. (But, I don\'t know exactly why they picked 21). The exterior styling has definite Cosmo cues, but the original definitely looks leaner. The interior is nothing like it except the fabric on the seats.

Rumour has it that the Cosmo 21 is going on sale in Japan (hmmm.. it looks too over the top to be anything but a show car, but there have been a lot stranger Japanese cars than this in the past), great news if it does as there might be hope for a rotary MX5. At the show there was also a new Coupe version of the MX5 with a non-removable roof - a rotary MX5 coupe would be close to the original RX7 in concept.
With a greater push for common car platforms the next generation RX7, RX8 and MX5 are rumoured to be the same basic car.

Sorry if this is ancient history but it was new to me so I though it\'s bound to be new to some others :)

RX7... The Deep Pocket Rocket...

Basically.........

An NB series MX-5 with a new body & customised interior. Drop in a 13B-MSP engine & you have the Cosmo-21 (for the 21st century)

The subsidary company did one & tried to get a small production run happening but it never got off the ground from my understanding.
