I am trying to find out where the stock water temp sensor is located (1993 FD - Jap import). I am trying to put in an after market gauge and sensor - and saw this from on Robinettes site:

water tem gauge install.

Unfortunately, where the red dot is in the photo, I already have another sensor which I think I broke (more photos to follow).

THe questions are:
What is the sensor (my broken one) for (i.e. water temp or fluid level)?
Is it a stock part?  If not, where is the stock water temp sensor located?
Is it just a Gauge sensor, or does it send input to the ECU, fans, thermostat, etc?

I went out this morning looking for the sensor at the local autofactors - the one they have for my FD does not look anything like the one I took out (even the thread looks different).

THis is where the sensor came out from. Currently I have a plug in there with masking tape. THe wire is just hanginhg down at the side and goes into the harness (so it looks like a stock part).

this is what the sensor looks like. Is this a stock part? Can I get it from Mazda?

The stock water temp sensor is already hooked up in the second photo you posted. Has the black wire going above the removed sensor.

The hole that has the red arrow pointing ... is the location for a after market sensor. so, you already have the aftermarket sensor in the correct place but that has been damaged or disconnected? not sure from the blurry photo?

sorry, forgot

it\'s just a gauge sensor

OK so the stock sensor is the one thats in place and connected (the 2nd photo, the black wire on the left).

The red arrow points to the place for an aftermarket sensor - but in this FD there is one there already. THe strange thing is that the wire (on the right of the red arrow) goes back into the harness - and it looks stock - even the wire itself looks like Mazda issue. And there are no additional gauges in the car.

This FD is stock - and it is an Automatic (maybe this makes a difference).

I would really be annoyed if I were to condemn that sensor (as I think it is broken - but don\'t know how to test it) - and put my aftermarket water temp gauge there - just to find out I have stopped an important (even critical) function from working.

It might be for the cold kickdown elimination. If you\'re after a location for another sensor, from memory there is another location on the side of the air pump.
