Helping a lad out today take his engine out.
He had a damaged turbo pack that he removed with the engine in last week to replace it with a reconditioned unit that he bought from a guy off ebay.
He put the new pack back on but when he started the car up the exhaust gaskets were leaking, (i didnt think he used exhaust paste on them). He didnt fancy taking the turbos off with the block in again, as its a pig of a job.
So out comes the block, when stripping the ancilleries off the engine, there were pools of oil in the intake pipes/incooler etc. It was a lot aswell the intercooler was dripping with oil.

I just wondered if it could be something that he hasnt put on right??.

Or could it be a sign that the turbo pack is faulty??

Cheers Andy:cheers

Oil in the intake pipe is normal mate as long as its just residue.

Pools of oil is bad,gd sign that turbo or turbos are faulty, oil is leaking past the turbo oil seals which means turbo\'s need reconditioning or at very least they need to be looked at by specialist.

Well..

No 1 - use new exhaust gaskets. I think using paste makes it a much worse job next time you have to do it - all tha cleaning up.

No 2 - So what was wrong with the old turbos? Did you consider that the oil might be left over from the old turbos? A bit of oil in the intake is normal.

Thanks for the replies

I think they had a crack in the manifold, i will double check today, but thats a good point, although he did have the \'y\' pipe off when removing the old ones and he didnt mention that he saw the oil then??.

Hi Gary, yeah it was pools of oil im afraid. Sounds like a duff turbo pack then, he wont be happy I think he paid £300 for them.:Nono!

As Martiny said oil could be left over from old turbo\'s. For peace of mind i would have new ones checked just to be sure, dont want to fit it all back together and find out then.................

Did the car smoke alot then (white)???????????

G@NDY

Yes mate it did smoke alot.:2Confused

It smoked alot with the old turbos yes??????

Did he drive it with the new ones at all?? Trouble is that once you get oil in your intake system/ exhaust it takes a while to burn it all out so car will smoke still even after its fixed.

From what you have said in first post it sounds like the first turbo\'s have caused the oil problem but now it makes you unsure so as i said before its best to get new set checked for peace of mind.

Which gaskets are leaking - block to manifold or manifolds to turbos????

G@NDY

From what he has said, he removed his old pack because of a crack and some shaft play. the inlet pipes/filter etc were dry when the pack was removed and the car didnt smoke at all.
QuoteDid he drive it with the new ones at all
He started the car up for half an hour and drove round the block.
QuoteWhich gaskets are leaking - block to manifold or manifolds to turbos
The turbo is leaking from the manifold to the turbo and not the block to the manifold.

Just spoke to him on the phone and he thinks that he has put the A-symetrical gasket for the oil return feed in upside down.!! Would this cause a build up of crank case pressure and cause the oil to blow past the seals.
Quoteits best to get new set checked for peace of mind.
Also he would like to know if theres anywhere that will test the turbos for him. Or is a case of any good turbo company ie turbo dynamics

Thanks again, Andy:WaveBye

If he got the oil feed return gasket in wrong and blocked the return then that would give all the symptoms he is getting yes.

Any good turbo specialists mate like turbo dynamics.
