3k ish for standard spec...

Also depends on exactly what needs doing.

I would say roughly:

£500 to remove/refit engine/ancillaries
£500 to rebuild
+ parts which depends how bad things let go.

Generally, as Lee says - about £2.5K-£3K turn key for a stock motor. Depending how much you reuse, if u wanted ALL new parts then the bill would be lots more.

Some Optionals :)

Roughly add:
£500 for porting (price depending on the port!)
£500 for an additional 8 dowels to the housings
£? (depending) for different Apex seals e.g. different 2mils, 3mils (plus cost of having the rotors machined/spark eroded to hold 3mils), Ceramics etc
£? other internal work, e.g. water/oil mods, balancing, clearancing etc etc etc etc etc

Basically, a lot cheaper than say a Skyline motor :)

Hi,

I\'m a poor postgraduate engineering researcher, and to follow on from this thread without high jacking it too much, how much would the bits cost if i were to rebuild an FD engine myself to standard spec? what bits should i definitely replace, which bits should i replace and what bits may i need to replace?

And finally would it be possible to rebuild the engine myself? I\'ve rebuilt a few R5 GTT engine\'s to fairly high specs, i have most tools at home such as folding engine cranes etc etc.. and i also have the use of the superb technicians at Notts uni along with all of their machinery in the workshops incase any special tools etc need to be manufactured in order to complete the rotary engine rebuild.

Kind Regards, Paul

P.S. i haven\'t bought a 3rd gen car yet, but was thinking of getting a cheap one in need of some tlc, any opinions or help on this subject as well would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Paul

I am in IT  and I am no Mechanical Engineer, and I have rebuilt a couple myself. (for the 1st Gen and older Rotaries) the 3rd gen is slightly different, bit I still beleive I could do it.

Unfortunately, there is no Haynes manual for the 3rd gen, cars, but if I were you, I would buy the Haynes manual for a 1st or 2nd Gen, just for the engine rebuild info.

you can also download the Mazda factory (US) manual for the 3rd gen from ILuvmyrx7.com.

Also, you can buy a video!  Its by Bruce Tarrentine.

I think armed with these, and your friends and equipment there, plus the advice available on this list, you could manage it.

Cheers Martiny:)

Yeah i\'ve done a search through the site for "engine rebuilds" and have found a few good bits of info from that. Armed with that and the info you\'ve just given me i\'m very tempted to give it ago. Just need to find a cheap enough 3rd gen to play with  ;)

Regards, Paul

P.S. any prices on parts and what i will or may need to replace and a good (i.e. cheap ;) ) place to buy them from would be much appreciated.

From what I understand, it\'s easier to rebuild a rotary than a piston engine.  When the time comes, I\'ll remove my engine myself and take it to an expert so they can examine the housings and tell me what I need to replace.  I\'d then attempt to do it myself.

Are engine rebuilds always neccissary? i mean like does every
RX-7 need a couple of grand spent on it at around 50-60k miles?

Why is this the case? it seems a bit of a pain in the butt and costly way of motoring.

Scuse my stoopidity, but i\'m new to the RX-7\'s engine and if i\'m to get one as my next car, i want to know if i have to fling money at it and why. ;)

Yeah they will all need a rebuild approx every 60k miles.  Hard to say when exactly.

The main reason would be because the rotor tips wear out.  On the plus side, 3k for an engine rebuild isnt that bad for the performance you get imho.

Unfortunately yes!

The thing is whatever fails first whether it be the tips, water seals, oil seals or other is an engine out job, also means that the engine needs stripping to get to the bits inside.

A rebuild is not always a major job other than taking it apart and putting back together again, as in the case of a good engine with a water seal gone.

But at 45k miles onwards, whilst it\'s apart it\'s prudent to replace worn parts rather than just slap it all back together again.

Engine out and in again costs around £1000 at most garages labour only, plus parts costs plus \'putting back together\' costs.

Hope this helps!

WGT\'s labour cost for the rebuild I had recently was £1500 - that\'s including a major amount of other work (engine mount, diff seal, full hose replacement, etc).  Seems pretty good to me.

Unless you\'re looking @ a porsche then most high-performance cars need seriously expensive work on them at similar intervals as the RX-7.

The more modded your car the more frequent the rebuilds.  A stock motor that has been well looked after from day one could last way past 60k miles.  I\'m hoping for a decent lifespan from my rebuild for sure.

Thats handy to know, i\'ll be keeping the car standard engine wise, i\'m only 22 so more than happy with the 0-60 and the top end!

i reckon once i hit 50k miles i\'ll get a rebuild just to be on the safe side.
