hi folks!!

I have finally made the big step to buying my first rex. i have has it since sat and am well chuffed with it!!!:Laugh

although there are a few questions i have and maybe you can all spread some light on the issues?? they may be a bit long in the tooth but bare with me as am stupid!:Hammer

1) how much oil pressure should my car be reading at idle and at revs?? i have a aftermarket oil pressure gauge and it differs to the stock one??

2) does anyone know gow to set up a greddy ext temp meter as it seems to shoot straight to about 890oc and stay there, even when started cold??

3) when i was havin a look in the engine bay over the weekend i found a plug unplugged. i re-connected it and later on that night i was on my way to the petrol station and had i slight burning smell which smelt like rubber.
about 5 seconds later there was a plume of smoke out of the bonnet vent so i pulled over. when i opened the bonnet i noticed it was coming from the pulley where the wire which i earlier connected was. (in picture)
anyone have any idea as to what its for and if it should be connected?? also since this happened i seem to be getting a slight whirring noise from around the same area which is bugging the hell out of me???

anyone got any ideas???

ps sorry for dragging the questions out.:Snoring

1) Stock oil pressure gauge is notoriously sh*t, just go with the after market one.
2) No idea with this one!
3) That\'s the signal wire for the magnetic clutch on the air pump, the ECU uses it to switch the air pump on and off. Does the air pump pulley turn at tickover? Maybe it\'s been disconnected cos the pump has jammed (hence the burning runner smell if the belt is slipping over a stationary pulley) or is malfunctioning in some way.

2) Press the memory button ( I think??)

It is currently showing the peak reading from its memory (possibly?)

edgasket

is that the memory turned on on the exhaust temp gauge? try pressing the button at the bottom of the guage?

The Air pump clutch should engage at about 2.5 -3K rpms. As said above, if the pump is siezed, the belt will start smoking!

Do you know if you car has a cat or not. As soon as mine was taken out and I had a PFC fitted the air pump is pretty much pointless and so you can unplug it. That maybe the reason why your is like that. It may of sezied over time and so pluggin it back in may have caused the belt to rub, as already said.

cheers for all your replies dudes!!

i have just had another good look at the air pump and i have noticed that when the car is running the pulley which is on the pump is not running perfectly true. it seems to wobble a slight bit, only about a few thou but it is visible. is there any sort of bearing in this pulley that can be replaced?? it sounds like that sort of knackered bearing grinding noise:( if yes where can i get some from??

as for the ext temp gauge i have tried hitting the memory button as you said and it does not seem to alter the shown temp at all. the memory is not showing on the pic coz when ya push it there is a green light which comes on by the number 12. even pressing the reset button does cack all:Tongue1

cheers guys

Any problems if the air pump is disconnected as mine may have seized too?

Lum

I\'ve had my air pump disconected for about 3 months with no probs at all! It only works at very low revs anyway even when connected. Something like below 2.5k i think.
If you\'ve got no cat in the car then the air pump is useless anyway as it\'s only function is to help stop the cat becoming blocked i think, and it also helps water down the exhaust gas to pass emissions tests!

arrouk

if the air pump is disconnected the cat will block up pretty quick. i have my old one somewhere if any one wants to make an offer.

Hmmm, strange cos i was getting the burning rubber smell at higher revs I think?

Lum

I think this might be because up tp about 2.5k the the air pump is working after that there is a magnetic clutch system that allows the pulley to continue spinning but switches the air pump off.
That has probably siezed so when the air pump is switched off the pulley will not turn causing the burning smell!
I live right near you mate if you want me to take a look gimmie a shout lum90@blueyonder.co.uk.

My airpump is knackered and makes a horrendous noise, disconnected it when I had the decat put in, ran it for a year with no issues. This is common.

Had to put the cat back in for the MOT, the air pump is driving me nuts now so getting the decat put back in asap.

Good luck getting it sorted.
