Short Shift Fitting Help

Hi Guys,
Only bought my 92 RX7 a few months ago and am slowly but surely getting it kitted out.
This is first time I\'ve hit a problem so I was hoping someone on here could help.
I have purchased a short shift kit and it seems very easy to fit......
However, I have undone the 4 bolts that hold the boot cover on and also undone the 4 bolts around the old shifter itself.
Now I cannot budge the old shifter to replace it.
I did have a go at undoing the 3 bolts at the top of the shifter and this enabled me to pull the leaver out of the shift unit. This is when I noticed there is a load of oil in there and it looks high.
Has anyone done this before and have any ideas?
