Hi all

I am a bit confused with the following BHP terminology

1)   power at the flywheel
2)   power at the wheels

Why the top one is smaller and which one really maters?

Which one is generally quoted with new cars for sale?

Does induction kit increases the power? I hear such differing opinions.
One rotary expert gave figure at 5 to 15BHP another said it was a waste of money.

I have 96 jap imported FD ( 285 bhp ) .  HKS back box, Blitz blow off valve, 16 bit injectors, 17” wheels on Tain set up.  Engine has been rebuilt by REWorks about 1.5 years ago.  The car really goes fast but I fancy some more power for street racing (on private roads of course)

How much power can I expect if I go for strait thru mid pipe with a resonance box and a power FC with a proper tune up?

Can any vendor quote me here for the job?  I am based in London and do not mind travelling up to 150 miles if the job can be done while I wait.

Michaeb

power at the flywheel is whats quoted by manufacterers and its the higher figure, thats the figure the engine puts out, but once youve put the power down through the transmission you lose some bhp. so the power at the wheels is what the car as a whole package is pushing out....

induction kit, depends on the car, usually no because your just sucking in hot air and its bad for the car. some cars respond well to them and can be less restrictive and letting turbos spool up quicker etc, again all depends on the car.

The top one shouldn\'t be smaller, the power at the flywheel is always going to be more than at the wheels.

Induction Kits can make a diffrence but can also have a negative affect, the problem with the rx7 is the engine bay gets ridiculously hot, there for having a pair of unshielded filters in there will drag all the hot air into the engine. To get an noticalble gain they would need to be shielded from the heat and have a good cold air feed. The stock air box does this very well.

There are a couple of options vendor wise but I would think the obvious two would be reworx in portsmouth and carl hayward in newbury both have excelent reputations.

If the engine produces 300 bhp, then by the time its been sent down the propshaft, turned the wheels, some of the power will be absorbed, that why the flywheel figure is always greater than the bhp at the wheel.
Manufacturers will usually quote flywheel figures, as they look bigger.
FD has a great cold air supply via the stock airbox, a good filter will give you poss 5-10 bhp gain or a cold air feed, yes the specialist was propably right that all the apexi units and similar out there are to look good but drawn in warm air so actually lose bhp from the stock unit. Exhaust could give you up to 20 bhp extra.
Hope this helps.

Hi

Thank you all for a informative replay.

Thanks, it is all making sense now.

Thanks, I had a clutch fitted by re-works and I think the boss is a real gentleman.

Thanks, are you telling me that by fitting the dictated pipe all I will get is an extra 20BHP ?  ( plus mapping unit )

Regardless of how much power you can eek out of it with just the Apexi FC I think it should be your first choice, it\'ll open up your options for modifying a whole lot more, right now you\'re limited and it\'d be unwise to change too much without one.

Hi

Thanks for the replay.  You are probably right.  Do you mean the FC alone or with the dicatted pipe ? Why do you recomend the Apexi ?

It looks like the induction kit is a waste of £350..

You can gain power from just having an Apexi PFC mapped to a stock car and this unit should cover you for every performance part you want to fit.

I have the apexi twin filters on mine - they look the muts nuts but honestly thats about it!  Spend the money on an Apexi PFC (with a commander unit), get the exhaust done and have a remap.  This will give you more power, less chance of detonation (as it would have been remapped for say optimax) and should deliver the power smoother.

Thats what me thinks anyway!  :Hammer

Do the PFC mate, have a long chat with Geff and explain what you want and as it\'s his engine he will tell you what it will give you and how much it will cost. :wave

Hi

Thanks for the advice.  I guess Apexi PFC it is.

Hi

How are you mate ?

Most tuners will have a lot of experience of the Apexi unit since its the most common, and in respects of this forum alone itd also be the best supported.

michaelb

Thanks for that
