Hi guys,

Had the car less than a week. Was setting off to work at about 12 noon. Pulled up at some traffic lights and all of a sudden the engine revs leap upto 4000rpm whilst idling. Thought the accelerator peddle was stuck or something so pushed it down a few times. Didn\'t help. Limped home with a very revving engine and switched it off.

Any ideas? I\'m guessing this may be expensive

Have you checked the accelerator wire is not stuck or try to adjust the screw where the wire is conacted, next to throutle body.

Hehe yeah I got a few strange stares though  :rollin

To be honest I wouldn\'t even class myself as a cars novice so I have no idea which little screw you\'re talking about. I guess i\'ll go out and stick my head in the footwell to see if anything stares me in the face.

if you pop the bonnett  you can follow the accelerater cable back. the screw is located on the right hand side of the plenum. i don;t have any pics that show it very well.

Does this picture help?

I went outside and had a play with the throttle cable and tried to undo and then tighten up the screw I think you were taling about. Seems to run ok now. Hope it doesn\'t do it again.  :yes

Cheers guys!

Well, it happened again this morning, but it\'s all got stuck at near enough full throttle so I can\'t even drive to a garage to get it fixed.

Any thoughts?

It seems to me like it\'s the throttle wire getting stuck somewhere between the peddle and the throttle assembly. I\'ve followed the wire from the plenum back to the bulkhead but I really don\'t know where it goes after that. Are there any pulleys etc behind there and if so how can I see it all?

turn car off and get someone to push pedal and check free travel of the cable u shld be able to check if it is sticking or snagging somewhere

It is sticking inside the housing, I\'m just not sure where at.

To return the throttle back to the idle position I have to pull the wire back. I had to unhook it from the throttle so that I could get a good grip on it with some plyers. It was that stiff!

I\'d like to take the wire out completly so I can see if it\'s frayed etc. but I\'m not sure how to unhook the wire at the peddle end.

Anyone know how much it\'ll probably cost to get it replaced?

Cheers,

How tight are the springs on the throttle body where the cable connects ??? I\'ve had the same problem with a powdercoated throttle body, but im not completely sure i\'ve put it back together, but the butterflies arn\'t closing properly !

The actual spring-loaded throttle bit (the bit that rotates  :rollin ) is fine, I can twist it with my hand and it seems to be ok and returns back to idle of it\'s own accord when the throttle wire is unhooked. It\'s the wire that\'s the problem it just doesn\'t run freely. I\'ve tried squirting some WD40 inside the housing to see if that freed it up a bit but no such luck  :(

very likely it has frayed it will only be 1hr labour to fix as not that complicated i wld think but a bit of a bugger in that u cant drive it..but u prob wont need a specialist to fix
