Sorry if this has already been asked, I did do a search...
I went to look at a \'92 FD today, pretty much standard model. After a half hour test run, including a quick blast, followed by 10 mins in traffic, the aftermarket water temp gauge showed about 105C. From previous threads this seems a bit high. Unfortunately, I didn\'t notice at the time whether or not the rad fans came on. :reallymad This was at around 1pm when it was quite warm outside.

Is high coolant temperature symptomatic of an engine fault in it\'s own right, or is it a coolant system fault which could lead to engine problems?
When it was first started, the fill spout didn\'t have any bubbles / vapour coming out of it, also it started quickly both cold and hot.

Thaks for any help  :)

seems a tad high, thought the fans would have cut in by then and brought it down. Although we have seen some freakily hot weather lately, when in traffic ive seen mine go up in the 90\'s but then fans come in and bring it down in the 80\'s again. It frequently gets in 100\'s when parked up then ridden again, i.e at petrol stations, etc, but once engine is running it drops down in no time.

Id say maybe see it again, make sure the fans are coming on. Also make sure water temp gauge is accurate? dont know how though :D

in traffic mine goes up to 99 when the fans kick in, seen 102 before they kick in although if Ive had my foot down Ive seen 109 before on the FC Commander which I was worried about although its running fine still.... typically driving I get betweek 93 and 100

maybe its a sign that the cooling system is using water rather than "coolant" as such (does that make sense? ) this would show higher figures than if you just use coolant.

OK, so you are running plain water at the moment, hence the high temperatures?

I guess this means then that I need to confirm both fan operation, and decent quality coolant / antifreeze. Thanks for the advice :)

No I dont think Im using plain water, I know its definately not recommended with these motors, I just suspect the mixture is more on the weaker side for coolant and strong water.... whereas as soon as I get chance Im changing the cooling system to pure coolant.... should keep temp levels down a bit more
