Right gentlemen, a starter for ten.
Took out the alternator as I thought it was knacked, it turns out it was fine â€" put it back in and lo and behold, the “Hold” light starts flashing â€" and the gearbox is definitely in limp mode.
Checked all the fuses etc and all seems fine.
FYI, the hold light also flashes as a function of the immobiliser being on. Checked the alarm fuses too â€" OK.

Anyone have any ideas?

Apart from KOKO is there any other way to reset the AT ECU?

I think if you do the normal ecu reset it also resets the gearbox and abs ecu\'s. Disconnect battery press brake pedal for 30 sec\'s or so then reconnect battery

Sorted!
Turns out the TPS I had removed earlier for a unrelated problem hadn\'t been correctly fitted! D\'oh

FYI if you have to refit the tps, you have to pre-load the spring/cam -  offer the sensor up to the mounting flange with the connector pointing upwards. When on, turn the connector towards the passenger side (normal position) before fixing down with the two screws. Adjust for the voltages as per Rob Robinette\'s how to.

(Didn\'t have time to check the voltages again, but I\'ll do this in the course of the next couple of days).

As soon as I did this the hold light stopped flashing after turning on the ignition.
