you really dont want to throw a tip at 200ft though! ;)

Martiny

Would rather throw a tip than have big end bearing sieze or a cam belt snap. I subscribed to the Rotary Aircraft forum for a while, and yes, some guys have had engine problems in mid air.

But the consensus was that a Rotary is unlikely to sieze, and you still have some power on the (hopefully) still good rotor to get you to a safe landing place.

you must remember that choppers dont fall out of the sky !!

as they drop - the wind forced the properler thingy to spin

I don\'t doubt the rotary is fantastic for avaiation, i have ventured onto the rotary aviation site myself, however i just dont want to be in anything up in the air when the engine goes! I dont care what type of motor it is! :D

Thats the theory - autorotation is used to put the plane down \'under power\'. In reality they come down hard regardless and every one dies! Look at the Apache - designed and built very much with crew survivability in mind - still tend to die if u r in one when it stops working!!

Least if its floods the plugs are easy to get too.

do they have dual redundant ignition systems on aviation rotaries ? that looks like a standard dizzy on that one so I guess not.

I\'d rather run a rotary in an aircraft than a piston engine. Rotaries are less likely to sieze if anything goes wrong and loosing one rotor doesn\'t automatically nuke the other one. They are also more suited to constant rpm operation.
