Possible Detonation

I\'ve done a few searches on the forums and haven\'t found anything that reflects what I\'m seeing with the RX at the moment.

I\'ve recently had a power fc fitted to the car along with a wide downpipe, decat and performance exhaust as well as upgrading the air filters. The car pulls really well and the performance is right where I\'d hope it would be.

However under hard acceleration the heat light flashes and remains falshing even when I lift off. This happens in any gear and it seems to start once I exceed around 7K rpm. Another time it will do it is if again I\'m accelerating up to around 6Krpm through the gears and once I top 100mph in 5th away it goes. If I top 100mph through gentle acceleration it doesn\'t happen

It had a recon engine fitted around 2.5K miles ago by RX Heaven and the mods were carried at WGT so I\'m confident everything has been done properly. I can see the knock bar on the commander is pretty far across but as soon as I lift off it drops back, unlike the heat lamp which keeps flashing.

Could it be that I have a noisy engine causing the knock sensor to pick that up or could it be more serious. I would have thought if I\'d been getting detonation Pip would have picked it up on the rolling road session when he set up the ECU. However, it is limiting the fun a little right now because just as I\'m seeing that M3 disappearing in the rear view mirror I\'ve got to lift off!

Sorry it\'s a long post but any thoughts will be very welcome...

Alrite mate,  does the heat lamp flash in 0.1 second increments 3 times?  That is knock warning.
If it\'s flashing in 0.5 second increments it\'s the Inj/AirF warning, injectors over 98% .
Also knock level over 60 doesnt necessarily mean detonation,
you can  turn these warnings off if you want to.
I have the Apexi FC too,  have you left your boost levels as they are or raised them, Im thinking about raising mine a bit, would be interested to hear if you have :-)
cheers,

Morning,

The heat lamp is flashing more than three time and it stays on longer than the 0.1 seconds as it illuminates so I guess it\'s injector duty. Is the cure to put in larger capacity injectors?

Pip did the set up and I\'ve not fiddled with it but I believe that he has left the boost as is....

All the best

Assuming you have PFC Commander and are familiar with how to use it, if you go into monitor and watch injector duty and knock level with peak hold set you can see what maximum levels are.

It\'s the familiar with how to use it bit that I fall down on...

I\'ll check the online manual and see how to do the peak hold bit...

Found out about the peak hold setting...

Injector duty was typically 85%
RPM 7000
Knock 89

I spoke to Pip who said because the light remained on when I lifted off it would indicate that the knock sensor was picking up something it thought was knock.

He said there was no sign on the rolling road and that if I was getting detonation the engine would probably have gone pop by now. So all in all I\'m pretty comfortable everythings OK...

I can get some high knock readings also, sometimes reaching 120. however this is always off load. remember that knock sensor is only a microphone so can  pick up other noise such as turbo manifold contracting after high boost run.

Standard PFC settings to activate heat light are 98% Inj Duty and >60 on Knock level.
